Hermes was born as the son of Zeus and Maia, daughter of the Titan Atlas. He is known for being the god of trade, messages, good luck, thievery, and safe passages. When he was a baby, Hermes stole Apollo's sacred cattle and hid them in a cave. Hermes also came up with a musical instrument named the lyre. Apollo was furious about the cattle and demanded them to be returned, but when he found out about the lyre, he was so amazed with it that he let Hermes keep the cattle in exchange for the lyre. "After a hearing before Zeus and the Olympian gods, Hermes was permitted to hold on to the herd (now down to 48 as he had already sacrificed two of them) if he gave Apollo his lyre." From his very first steps, Hermes had already learnt the ways of thievery and trade. In addition, Hermes' gifted ability to speak and convince people, along with his quick speed, made him an excellent messenger. Zeus, along with many of the other Olympians, relied on Hermes to carry out messages.

Hermes appears as the messenger of the gods, a dream god, and the protector of travelers. Because he is the messenger for the gods, he was also the god of roads and doorways. Hermes helped Odysseus twice on his voyage home. He helps Odysseus escape from Calypso's island where he was imprisoned for 7 years, and he also disguises himself to help Odysseus escape the sorceress Circe.

Some common themes and ideas that represents Hermes would be his caduceus, also known as the kerykeion. The staff has two snakes twirled around it. The caduceus has become Hermes' sole object of possession, and it shows his respect to all physicians and doctors, along with any respectable person from the medical field. Often, Hermes guided lost souls to the river of Styx where they could enter the Underworld and be evaluated. He taught mortals one of the most important themes, which was the fact that you can't escape death even if you try.
