The main goal is to achieve an objective representation of reality. 

In painting artists created veracity, putting themselves in no political or idealistic posture. 

Since their topics were different, artist were accused from “ugliness” due their attachment to reality, and for not making a glorification or transformation in the subjects of their art. 

The art was considered, to some extent, something useless, in the sense that there is no utilitarian purpose of the art. Romanticism believed in the Latin expression “Ars gratia artis”, meaning “art for art’s sake”
