New Hampshire Task Force on Effective Teaching Phase I Pillars

An experienced education administrator, Janet Valeri has been principal of Ledge Street School in Nashua for nearly a decade. One initiative Janet Valeri has been part of in her time as a New Hampshire educator is the New Hampshire Task Force on Effective Teaching, which oversees the evaluation of teachers and education administrators. She participated in Phase I of the task force initiative, which found four core pillars of effective teaching.

The first pillar focuses on teacher preparation programs. These programs must successfully prepare teachers for their early teaching experiences and develop core teaching competencies. The second pillar, meanwhile, follows the first with extensive mentoring during the first few years of a new teacher's teaching career, refining the lessons learned in teacher preparation programs and applying them to practical situations.

The third pillar focuses on the long-term with hands-on professional development that refines the teacher's skills as well as those of the students, in compliance with state and federal education standards. The final pillar of the task force's blueprint focuses on developing evaluation policies that provide meaningful, valuable data on teacher performance, closing the loop of professional development with meaningful feedback.

Implementation of these pillars requires long-term cooperation between stakeholders and a commitment to evidence-based practice development.
