Kids have to back up and justify their thinking. :) The text states, "It seems reasonable to suggest that classrooms should be filled with talk, given that we want them filled with thinking." This quote helps to sum up our ultimate goal... we want kids to THINK!

Classrooms discussions promote students to take accountability for their learning. Having students discuss information also allows them to think about information a different way and promotes students to help each other to widen their zones of proximal development. It additionally allows them to create higher order thinking skills. Vygotsky suggests, "Talk is the representation thinking." Thus, we must have our students speaking in order to stimulate their minds.

According to the article, Content Area Conversations the balance of talk is highly weighted on the teacher. It has been found that higher achieving students are in classrooms with a higher percentage of student talk. This makes me think about what I was once taught who ever is doing the talking is doing the learning.

Classroom discussions promote a positive learning community, in which students are better able to retain the content they are being taught. For example, in the article referencing Math Communities the author spoke on how students were able to communicate with a "shoulder partner" in discussing how to solve a mathematical problem. The students were required to listen to the students full response, before interrupting. This strategy not only allowed the students the chance to communicate with one another, but also helped the students grow as "listeners".
