The United States faced crisis over the status of whether or not slavery should be legal. The Compromise of 1850 was essentially a set of 5 bills passed in September of 1850 which settled confrontations between the north and the south over the status of territories being declared as a slave state or a free state. The Lands North of the Missouri compromise line were primarily Free states and those south were slave states. Southern States prevented the adoption of the Wilmot Proviso which would have outlawed slavery in any new territories. Popular sovereignty allowed states to decide whether or not they wanted to be a slave or free state. The compromise itself proved to be widely popular politically. On September 20th 1850 the District of Columbia abolished slave trade but not slavery itself. Because of the debate California was admitted as a free state while the New Mexico Territory and the Territory Of Utah became organized under the rule of popular sovereignty.

Henry Clay was born in 1777 in Hanover County, Virginia. Henry first worked as a frontier lawyer before becoming a Kentucky senator and then speaker of the House of Representatives. Henry was known as the “Great Compromises” involved in three compromises during his time. Clay was a nationalist’s devoted to economic development and he also disapproved of slavery as a system. His main objective was to avoid a civil war so on January 29th 1850, he introduced a number of series of resolutions in an attempt to seek a compromise and avert a crisis between the North and South. Henry Clay’s solution called for the admission of California as a free state and the abolition of slave trade in the nation’s capital and the Amendment of the Fugitive Slave Act.

Daniel Webster was born in 1782 in Salisbury, New Hampshire. Following his graduation from Dartmouth College, Webster became a successful lawyer in Boston. He eventually became elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and later won a seat in the U.S. Senate. Webster stood behind Clay’s compromise declaring California a free state, the abolition of slave trade in D.C, and the Amendment of the Fugitive Slave Act. Daniel Webster can be remembered for his famous three hour speech he gave to the U.S. Senate on March 7th 1850. In his speech, Webster claimed that slavery could not be eradicated where it already existed but argued that it should not take root in new U.S. territories. Webster also insisted that citizens abide by the Fugitive Slave Act and return captured, escaped slaves back to their southern owners.

The new territories were up for grabs amongst the Slave states and Free states leaving the North and South in a constant debate over where these new territories would join since there were 13 of both types of states. The new territories came about through the Louisiana Purchase. The North and South decided that states north of the compromise line would be free and states below would be slave states. Utah and New Mexico would decide which side they would join through popular sovereignty (voting). The nation’s capital, Washington D.C. also abolished slavery during this time period.

The Compromise of 1850 sparked secession and war between the Slave States and the Free states because both sides already had 13 states and adding another state to either slave or free states would cause an uneven balance causing them to go to war with each other. This probability sparked high tensions between the north and the south.
