He owns a Fish and Chips shop, was born in Pakistan but later on emigrated to Britain. He fell in love with a British woman, Ella, they had seven children, six sons and one girl. George Khan had grown up, with a Pakistani family structure, which includes a dominant father figure. He wants to practice the pakistani culture and family structure with his new family as well, but that is a challenge, because his Children has grown up i Britain, which is a lot different to being raised in Pakistan. They feel more british than Pakistanis. His Children doesn’t listen to him and when he starts planning his sons marriages, they won’t accept it. George is tearing his relationship with his wife and children, by trying to control their life. He also make the relationship between Ella the mother and the children more close to each other, because Ella tries to protect her children from George, that gets more and more aggressive and violent because of the frustration during the resistance from muslim/pakistanis culture.

He did not have children to be a father. it is more of a cultural thing where the children are a symbol of status and a way to bind different families together. It is shown that he doesn't love his kids, when he acts like one is dead, when i reality, he just doesn't fit his father's idea. 

At first George Khans and his childrens relationship are primary good. Despite their differences they still love each other. But later on, when George is planning an arranged marriage for his sons, their relationship starts to crumble. George gets more and more aggressive and violent towards the children, because of the frustration during the resistance against the marriages.

In the movie we see the multiculturalism from the side of the “different” people. We see a family that is split up between two ways of living. The movie makes it very clear that there is a big difference in the cultural backgrounds of the parents, and therefore can we see that the mother symbolise the classic britain in some ways, while the dad is clearly a pakistani father. the mother in this movie is actually a great symbol of how multicultural differences should be viewed. she respects her husbands background and beliefs, but doesnt think it is okay to harm or force other people into it. the taher is the opposite. he will not let anything change his minds. he will not let his children merry white or let them make their own opinions. in this movie, racism is turn around.

  • She is the english culture of the family. 
  • She is a strong and powerful woman, but she is kind of afraid of her husband.
  • She is going through a development in the movie - first she is afraid to say something against her husband, but in the end she tells him off.
  • She is the glue that holds the family together - she has a relationship with both her children and her husband and therefore she can be the peacemaker. 
  • She is afraid of conflicts - she does not talk it out, she ignores the problem until it is gone.    


Did you find any imagery in the movie? ( symbols and metaphors)
  • Tea is a symbol for the british culture. The father always says he only wants half a cup of tea, because he doesn't want to be complete english.
  • The sculpture is a symbol of the children’s own ways. They don’t want to be good muslims, they don’t want to be muslims at all. The sculpture is so controversial and inappropriate and it is a message to his father: He couldn’t care less of muslim culture and not having sex until marriage.

Is called Gandhi in the family. He does what he is told. he is very kind and polite. He doesn't break any rules, and he tries to keep the family together.

he is also a rulebreaker, and he makes provocative art, and ask for money from his parents. 

Tariq
He is a rule breaker. He says in the end of the movie, that he isn’t pakistani. He has english girlfriend. he doesn’t want to be married to a Pakistani girl.

she makes pig sausage to herself and Saleem and Tariq, they don't care about their father's rules.
