Just about every song in existence has the musical element of "closeness" . Although from the reading Ben Ratliff seems to associate closeness with rock, jazz, and brass instrumental types of genres. (if that makes sense) Leaving hip hop and Dance music out of the picture. Ratliff says closeness " is two anythings playing a single anything together.." (169). Which just about every genre has.

Ratliff's Closeness

In reading the chapter it seems that closeness consists of layers. Layers, created by the instruments as well as the vocals of the performers. Well timed beats and synchronized vocals create this sense of closeness and not only that the position of the performers has an effect as well. Ratliff says "Sometimes the closeness of two musicians within a band is what makes the band capable of moving beyond normal limits" (165).

Considered Closeness?

"Into the Ocean" by Blue October I feel has a sense of closeness thanks to the instruments on the background. When the verse "without a life vest I'd be stuck again" you can see that his voice voices pitch stays the same but the background instruments make it it seem as if his voice heightened.

Layers of sound seem to be what makes up the element of "Closeness". I agree with Ratliff's arguments to an extent. I agree with how the position of the performers, coordination of the instruments, and the playing and singing together play a role in "closeness". However, for the most part he only mentions Jazz and Rock genres as examples. which I don't know if it was because those genres are his expertise or because he feel those are the only genres that have the element, but I would say that's the only thing I disagree with.
