Being able to find and make effective use of policies and frameworks is an important requirement of Assignment 3. You are expected to have some understanding of a range of state and national policies when you begin teaching.

Here are some links to get started. We have pulled some out of the Victorian resources for more detail to show how to get started. Please share others you find on the Assignment 3 Q & A discussion:

Vic Dept Ed and Training (2017) School Policy and Advisory Guide Link (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. This will lead to to a variety of policies- click on the alpha listing at the top eg Bullying Link (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. ; Health & Well Being Services Link (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. ; Student Engagement Link (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. ;

Also important for new and potential teachers in Victoria to know that, over the next two years, the Department is helping Victorian schools to implement School-wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) which is an evidence-based framework for preventing and responding to student behaviour.

We've uploaded here an example of a previous submission for this assignment. This paper achieved a High Distinction. Please do not copy and paste from this exemplar, as some students have done in the past. Turnitin is able to recognise if you do this. The case study that was used in the exemplar is different to the ones that we are using, but the requirements of the task were very similar (we now have more of a focus on external support agencies, guidelines, policies). We hope that it is useful for you to see how someone else has successfully engaged with this task.

Don't forget to check out the Podcasts in the modules for Weeks 5, 7 and 8. These podcasts feature interviews with teachers, discussing scenarios of student behaviour with reference to theories of behaviour. They have been created with Assignment 2 in mind, so the teachers discuss what resources and strategies they would use in response to different behaviours.

The Podcasts which support Assignment 2 are accessible in Canvas:

* Podcast 2: Week 5 *
https://anchor.fm/swinburneonline/episodes/EDU60016-Assignment-2-Podcast-2-e3726a/a-ab6ug6

* Podcast 3: Week 7 *
https://anchor.fm/swinburneonline/episodes/EDU60016-Assignment-2-Podcast-3-e37btm/a-aagnq7

* Podcast 4: Week 8 *
https://anchor.fm/swinburneonline/episodes/EDU60016-Assignment-2-Podcast-4-e37cl1/a-aagt2i

These Podcasts can be viewed on mobile and desktop within Canvas, but also via Google Podcasts, Spotify, Pocketcast, Breaker, Stitcher, RadioPublic, or in Apple (PC and mobile). You simply need to search for EDU60016, and the podcasts will appear in the search list.

The great aspect of these podcasts is that you can listen to them to fill in spare moment you have and you do not even be logged in Canvas to do so: you may Bluetooth them via Spotify in your car or listen to a few snippets when waiting somewhere to fill in the time and still complete some learning.

Cognitive wrappers, created by instructors, are a metacognitive strategy that students can use to evaluate their performance and reflect on their own work to assist them in improving from one assessment to the next. As a result of these cognitive wrappers students have been shown to change their habits to improve their own learning process and assessment submissions.

Bowen (2013) suggests that cognitive wrappers have four parts:

Rationale – The purpose of the assessment
Reflection – Questions and prompts that guide students through the preparation for the assessment
Comparison – Asks students to reflect on what they did well and what needs improvement
Adjustment – Prompts students to plan for how they will adjust their learning process for the next assessment.

We have decided to try and incorporate cognitive wrappers into our practice in this unit! It might also be something that you can add to your teacher toolkit for future use. At this link, you can find a cognitive wrapper that Bec has created for you.
