The book Panic takes place in a town called Carp in New York. It also takes place in the summer. “Panic began as so many things do in Carp, a poor town of twelve thousand people in the middle of nowhere: because it was summer, and there was nothing else to do.” The setting is important because, if the book didn't take place in a small town then panic wouldn't of been created. Thus, the whole story wouldn't have taken place.

The book is written in 3rd person limited with different sections told from dual pov’s. Two main characters serve as the narrator and alternate throughout the story. Examples/Proof: "Heather spotted Matt’s car right away-the old used Jeep he'd inherited from his uncle, it's rear bumper plastered with half-shredded stickers he tried desperately to key off as though he had backed up into a massive spider web.”

“Her head was ringing, and her mouth taste like metal. Over. It was over. Her arms felt suddenly useless, her muscles weak with relief, as she made her way clumsily down the ladder, dropping the last few feet and take him to stumbling steps before writing herself. People reached out, squeeze her shoulders, patted her on the back. She didn't know if she smiled or not. “You were amazing!” Nat barreled to her through the crowd Heather barely register the feel of gnats arms around her neck. “Is it scary? Were you freaked?”

“He was happy. He was more than happy. He was psyched. He was hanging out with Nat today. His mom was home, awake, and actually making breakfast. He leaned in the door frame and watched her crack eggs into a pan, break the yolks up with the edge of a wooden spatula.”

“His mom blushed. Busted. “He's just a friend, Dodge.” Dodge doubted it, but he said nothing.”

There are two protagonists in this book. Their names are Heather and Dodge. This is shown because the book's chapters are in from their perspective in a way. In the book you are able to really see these characters develop and grow as people, especially Heather.

One of the main conflicts is Heather vs. Panic. Throughout the book Heather is in competing in challenges in Panic. Other characters involved in this conflict are Dodge, Natalie, Bishop, and Ray. “Heather knew she had to move if she wanted to stay in the game. Heather forced herself away from the tank and inched forward onto the wooden plank, which had been barely secured to the ledge by means of several twisted screws.” This quote is showing how she is challenged by Panic. There are many other examples throughout the book as well.

The antagonist of the book is the game Panic. If it weren't from the game then none of the problems in the book wouldn't of happened. The game caused fights between Natalie and Heather, two characters in the book and fights between other people as well. ““You have to believe me, Heather. I never meant to lie to you.”“So why did you do it, Bishop?” Heather crossed her arms. She didn't want to listen to him, she wanted to be angry.

Theme

The theme in this book is don't let fear stop you, fear can conquer you or make you stronger. At first Heather's fears are controlling her and ruining her life. Through Panic she learns to overcome them and she becomes a much stronger, braver person. When she saw her boyfriend cheating on her her fear of being alone Took over causing her to jump, as you can see in the first quote. In the second quote after most of panic is over she realized that she wasn't playing to prove to Matt (her ex-boyfriend) she realized she was going to play for herself and give her and her sister a better life her fears strengthened her and made her a stronger, better person. Heathers fear of being alone and not being acommplished in life conquered her life in the beginning of the story.

Ex/Evidence: “ Heather reach the top of the ridge just as Derek Klieg got a running start, hurled himself into the air, body contorted, shouting. A few seconds later, a cheer went up as he hit… “I'm going to jump,”Heather said realizing as she said it how stupid it sounded how stupid it was. All the sudden, she thought she might puke.... “I'm going to jump now. Before I chicken out”.... She took a deep breath. She closed her eyes. She jumped.”

“But she was playing for herself now, for herself and Lily; she was playing because she had made it thus far, she was playing because if she won, it would be the first and only time she had ever won something in her life.”

Characterization

Speech: ““You take the picture Heather.” Dodge said. His voice was slightly gentler. “You send it.” This shows the Dodge is a caring person and that he's willing to make sacrifices. It also shows that he cares about his friends.
Thoughts: Throughout the book Dodge is constantly thinking about Panic and getting revenge on Ray. It seems to be his determination. Throughout the book we learn that Dodges older sister played panic and was paralyzed from the waist down by Ray's older brother (why he wants revenge.). We also learn that he wants to use the money if he wins to pay for his sister's physical therapy.

Effect on Others: Dayna, one of the characters in the book, feels very comfortable around Dodge due to the fact he is her step-brother. I feel like he has a positive effect on her, he was always supporting her and if you want Panic he wanted to give the money to her. I also think Dodge has a good effect on his friends for the most part. “Dodge! Dodge!” Dana and his mom were standing outside by the handicapped ramp Dana was waving frantically, sitting up as a tall as she could in her chair. and she was grinning. They both were- smiling so big, he could see all their teeth even from a distance.”
Actions: When Natalie and Heather are running away from the scene with cops Dodge helps them and keep them safe. I believe there are multiple size of Dodge with his actions. For example after his sister is paralyzed by Ray's older brother, Dodge goes to Ray’s house and wants to kill Ray’s older brother.
Looks: We never get information about what Dodge looks like, although we do know he has a tattoo on his chest. “He ran water through his hair and pulled on a clean white T-shirt, one that showed just a bit of the tattoo that covered most of his chest and wrapped around his right shoulder and forearm.”

Book Review

I would definitely recommend this book, Panic by Lauren Oliver is a really great read. The storyline is very interesting and it keeps you hooked. There are a bunch of surprises throughout, and they keep you on the edge of your seat. I believe the theme of the book is really strong and something everyone can learn by reading this book. Panic is definitely a very thrilling book, and Lauren Oliver writes it very well. I feel like the characters are really well developed and you are really able to see the characters grow as people. While reading this book, I felt like I was with them in the story. It was almost like I was a character in the book dealing with these problems and overcoming them. The issues these characters face are real life issues that some people in the world deal with, but they have a fictional element to them. Overall, I would really recommend reading this book if you get the chance. Lauren Oliver did a great job writing it, and I hope you chose to pick up this powerful read.

Leadership

In Panic, I think that Bishop acted as a leader. One reason why I think this is because when he saw Heather might die if she did a challenge he made a plan to help her. "Then, unexpectedly, he reached out and seized the gun...Dodge did something with the gun-opened the chamber, Heather thought, although his fingers moved so quickly, she couldn't be sure." This quote is an action where Bishop had told Dodge to help save Heather. He had a whole plan and lead it to make sure she was okay. Another reason why I think he is a leader is because he was a judge for panic. “I did” Bishop's voice got louder. He was sweating. “I told her to do it. I told all of them to do it. I started the fire at the Graybill place. I'm the one…” His voice broke. He turned to Heather. His eyes were pleading, desperate. “I'm a judge. That's what I wanted to tell you. That's what I wanted to explain. What you saw the other day, with Vivian…” This quote is showing Bishop admitting he lead the making of all the challenges in panic. He was in charge of panic this year and in my opinion, that makes him a leader. This is because he was in charge of a big game in Carp and you'd have to posses leadership qualities in order to be in charge of panic.
