People Harmfully Using Animals in Inhumane Ways for Entertainment ("Fahrenheit 451")

Throughout Fahrenheit 451, a common social issue that resurfaces is humans purposely harming/killing animals purely for their enjoyment. In Fahrenheit 451, the firefighters let the Hound loose in order for it to hunt rats, chickens, and cats. This was done specifically as entertainment for the firefighters, as there wasn’t a justified motive behind it. “...[L]et rats loose in the firehouse areaway, and sometimes chickens, and sometimes cats that would have to be drowned anyway” (Bradbury 22) is evidence for this. Furthermore, Mildred suggests taking the beetle (a vehicle of some sorts) for a way for Guy to destress. Normally, this wouldn’t be a problem, but Mildred also recommends running over animals as a bonus to driving the beetle in the country. “It’s fun out in the country. You hit rabbits, sometimes you hit dogs” led me to believe this (Bradbury 61) . As seen by the quote, Mildred provides no rational reasoning as to why Guy must slaughter the animals while driving the vehicle. Furthermore, there was an incident where Clarisse had mentioned how people speed in the country. She also mentions that billboards used to be twenty feet long, but now are two hundred feet long because people are going so fast that they can’t read the billboards without them being stretched out. This shows that vehicles are going so fast, that there isn’t time for nature to be acknowledged. “Have you seen the two-hundred-foot-long billboards in the country beyond town? Did you know that once billboards were only twenty feet long? But cars started rushing by so quickly they had to stretch the advertising out so it would last" (Bradbury 4).

As witnessed throughout countless news reports, online articles, and personal experience, there have been numerous records of animal abuse across the world. For example, there have been several dogfights throughout America, even though these acts of cruelty have been considered illegal since 2008. Dogfighting is a blood “sport in which two dogs are pitted against each other in a fighting pit and forced to rip each other to shreds in a fight to the death for the ‘amusement’ and monetary gain of spectator-gamblers” (“Dogfighting”). Dogs usually start fighting around 15 months of age (“Dogfighting”). These fights last roughly 10 minutes as well (“Dogfighting”). These people who witness dogfights place bets upon which dog they think will come out standing, and not mauled into submission. Savagery and brutality are beaten into these dogs into order to “train” them to fight (Bebeneck). Another way dogs are abused is through puppy mills. Puppy mills produce mass amount of puppies that they then sell (Bebeneck). With puppy mills across the country, there are roughly two million puppies per year. 90% of puppies sold in pet stores originate from puppy mills (Benebeck). Female dogs are usually “thrown out” at age 5, after birthing two litters a year (Benebeck). To connect the two, puppies are usually bred before 1 year of age just to produce a litter of potential fighting dogs (“Dogfighting”).

People/Society Harming and Neglecting Nature for Their Own Benefit

Throughout history, humans have taken nature to benefit solely ourselves. In recent years, nature’s resources are dwindling more than ever, and the natural and societal environments will soon be falling apart along with nature. For example, humans have been affecting the environment by mismanaging our trash. Trash is capable of traveling throughout bodies of water to accumulate on nearby land masses. This trash can harm nature by affecting habitats, transporting chemicals, and threatening aquatic life (“Impacts of Mismanaged Trash”). Because of our mismanaged trash and other bad decisions in nature’s eyes, humans have destroyed roughly eighty-three percent of wild mammals (Carrington). This means that wildlife has gone down 60% in the past 40 years (Chiorando). Moreover, it is estimated that just 25% of land is untouched by humans. By 2050, it will be around 10% (Chiorando). Most focus has been going into having bountiful amounts of healthy livestocks, and disregarding wild mammals (Carrington). Furthermore, humanity has also destroyed half of earth’s plants (Carrington). A possibility of over one million plant/animal species are in danger of becoming extinct, most of that reason is because of humans (Plumer).
