The bionic eye was created to help patients with retinal degenerations such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP) (Stingl et al., 2015). According to (Second Sight, 2016), “The Food and Drug Administration approved the Argus II in February 2013 and Health Canada approved it in December, 2014.” There are different types of bionic eyes and patients must meet specific criteria to be considered for this treatment. Patients may qualify for the Argus II if they have severe to profound RP, are 25 years of age or older, bare light or no light perception in both eyes, previous history of useful form vision, willing to receive clinical follow-up and rehabilitation, and aphakic or pseudophakic (Second Sight, 2016). The bionic eye does not restore total sight, but it can improve the quality of life by being able to see some light, and position of objects (Roach, 2013). As a nurse, knowing and understanding information regarding the bionic eye can help improve patient care or outcomes after surgery. The bionic eye surgery is expensive. However, nurses can promote this procedure to patients who qualify and the decision is then up to the patient and doctors.

I support the idea of helping people with RP improve their quality of life and vision. If the resources and funding was available and I had RP, I would have this procedure done. People may argue that if someone has once seen, why would they want to restore their sight if they go blind? However, I ask, would you not want to see the beautiful colors of fall, watch the wake in the lake, or see your children or grandchildren’s smiling face?
