The theme for Flowers For Algernon is that you should be thankful for what you have. For example, Charlie doesn't have intelligence at the beginning of the story, but he is still happy and thankful for what he has.

It seems like a big part of Flowers for Algernon is that Charlie is "motor-vated" (motivated) enough to be chosen to participate in the experiment. Doctors Nemur and Strauss said that most people of his low mental intelligence are hostile and uncooperative. But that he has a good nature and is interested and eager to learn.

Summary

Charlie is intellectually disabled and his teacher, Ms. Kinnian recommends him for an operation to become more intelligent. After a series of tests to determine how smart he is before the operation, he is sent to race against a rat called Algernon (who has already gone through with the operation). After the surgery, he starts to slowly gain intelligence, but, as things are looking up for Charlie, Algernon dies! If Algernon dies, will Charlie die too? Dr.Nemur and Dr.Strauss are getting worried. Charlie, desperate to do some good for the world before he dies, continues doing research on how to give people artificial intelligence. He comes to a conclusion and all of the research that the other doctors have done is sound.

Flowers for Algernon is written in first person view. The way you can tell is because it is written in a diary/journal form. Charlie also uses "I" and "Me" which tells you that he is writing about himself.

Charlie has two character traits that came in very strong to me. I think that throughout the entire story he was very hopeful and determined.

"Ms. Kinnian said that the TV working in my sleep helped out. She said I reached a plateau. Thats like the flat top on a hill"
I think that this quote really represents Charlie getting hopeful.

"After the operationim gonna try to be smart. Im gonna try awful hard"
This shows how motivated Charlie is.
