What are the northern lights?

-These lights can be seen from around September to March when the sky is dark enough for them to be visible. However, they can only be seen from certain places. These places include Canada, Alaska, Scandinavia, Greenland and Siberia.
The most common colors that appear in the lights are green, blue, yellow, pink and violet, though sometimes white and orange may show up as well.
-The northern lights look much different to the naked eye than to the lens of a camera. The reason for this is that the part of our sight responsible for seeing color in the night isn't the strongest, but some cameras are able to pick these up just fine. To a real eye, the lights will seldom appear as more than very pale white.
-They have been there for a very long time. In fact, one of our earliest records of them dates back to a clay tablet created around 567 BCE.
-Some ancient north American communities believed the lights to be a sort of light highway to guide our souls to heaven.
-The lights are an effect of the magnetic field of the earth coming into contact with charged sun particles.
- Locals in Lapland apparently call the lights revontulet, meaning "fox fires" because long ago people living in that area thought that the lights were caused by an arctic fox running through the sky.

Though the sun is more than 90 million miles away, a strong storm can send charged particles in all kinds of directions. When this direction happens to be towards us, the particles collide with the atoms of Earth's atmosphere. This can excite the atoms and cause them to light up. The reason for different colors within the lights is that different gasses in the atmosphere produce different colors when excited.
