Because young people have so many more fun and exciting media outlets, political news seems less appealing. Also, the preferred media platforms (such as YouTube or Facebook) deliver quick but potentially biased and non-thorough reporting. For example, people with conservative political stances might seek out sources that align with their same views, avoiding liberal news sources, and vice versa.

"During the 2000 campaign between Bush and Gore, over two thirds of young people [between ages 18-29] said they rarely followed public affairs. Since then, political interest among young people has recovered somewhat; however, compared to senior citizens, they are still twice as likely to report low political interest." (7)
The reason many young people do not want to get involved in politics is because they do not trust the government system to listen to their voices. They feel they can make a greater, more evident impact by taking action into their own hands by volunteering in their communities.
https://www.army.mil/e2/c/images/2012/08/21/261265/original.jpg

Older people have come from a generation that have habitually followed politics and continue this practice. Major political events used to be one of the few sources of news and interest. Political news has now become drowned out by the vast variety of other TV shows, websites, and other activities. However, this increased prevalence of the internet and other ways to widely spread information can lend itself to inform young people on politics in a platform preferable to them.
