Grade 06 is still experiencing difficulties understanding the correct meaning of English terminology found in the mathematics textbook. Six students out of the 16 students have these kinds of problems. They are capable enough to read those words with correct pronunciation. But without knowing the real meaning, they are reading it. After reading it, they used to ask me what was said in the question.

Problem:

How can the integration of low-cost digital tools improve English language speaking skills among Grade 8 students in my classroom?

Background:

English speaking skills among Grade 8 students in my classrooms are often weak due to limited exposure, lack of practice, and traditional teacher-centered methods. Many students feel shy or afraid to speak in English, which hinders their confidence and language development. Observations show that only a small percentage actively participate in spoken English activities. The speaking assessments highlight that speaking remains the most underdeveloped language skill in them related to English. With increased access to mobile devices, using low-cost digital tools may offer students more engaging, accessible, and consistent opportunities to improve their English speaking skills in meaningful ways.

Out of 40 students,10 do not do homework as a habit. Everyday, when students are asked to present their homework, these students tell different reasons for not completing. They are clever students to do the work but their work is not systematic. Even they do not maintain their dressings and personal appearance neat.

Problem: Many of the students in BE classes show low participation in speaking activities even though they can understand English.

Background:In many BE classes, students hesitate to speak English due to fear of making mistakes, lack of vocabulary or low confidence.I noticed that students are silent in discussion or reply in their mother tongue instead of English. When I asked, students said they feel,"shy" or "afraid of being laughed at". And students performed better in written tasks than in oral presentations or speaking tests.Whle students answered confidently in their first language, their answers are short or hesitant in English.

This shows a gap between understanding & performance in oral communication.

Improving speaking participation will not only help students with fluency but also with confidence and long-term communication skills.

Possible strategies to test in my action research:

*Using pair/group activities instead of teacher-centered questioning.

*Introducing role plays or dramas (Which I am already involved in)

*Using technology tools(voice recording apps, interactive games,or AI powered feedback)

Topic : Improving grade 7 students understanding of algebraic expressions through the use of real life examples and visual aids.

During mathematics lessons, I was observed that many Grade 7 students face difficulties in understanding algebraic expressions, especially when variables are used instead of numbers. Students often get confused about the meaning of letters in expressions and fail to connect them to real-world contexts. This lack of understanding affects their confidence and performance in algebra, which is a foundational area of mathematics.

So I selected this topic as my research topic.

In a Grade 6 bilingual class, 20 out of 35 students are obtaining low marks in science during the term test. However, these same students perform above 40 marks in Mathematics and English. This indicates that the issue may not be related to overall academic ability, but possibly due to difficulties in understanding scientific concepts in the bilingual education language barriers, or lack of effective learning strategies in science.
