The first 15 pages reminded me of what we do with our children. We want them to be the best they can, so we help them, discipline them and guide them in their path through childhood (and hopefully allow for a two way conversation). I took the reading of how we should lead our subordinates in the same manner, that we should be at a level where they feel comfortable coming to us for help, guidance and even corrections (which are always the harder conversations to have).

Almost all books on leadership talk about taking responsibility, being willing to have the hard conversations in productive manners, and developing potential in ourselves and those we lead. I have found this to be true: "The barriers and obstacles to daring leadership are real and sometimes fierce "(p 5). Dare I make this next statement? I have found this to be true at SCOE because often people in upper leadership seem highly defensive and even threatened when questioned or challenged.

It is important for effective leaders to understand that when you dictate a solution and it goes south, you have to take full responsibility. Good leaders draw on strength and experience of those around them.

"trust is earned in the smallest of moments": paying attention and listening

Know whose opinions matter and pay attention to those. The square squad is a nice little exercise to focus on those whose opinions matter. Others (who are quick to judge, condem, etc.) can and should be ignored or put into a compartment with those other things in life that you should not allow to take up time and energy. I have found that people who jump on the judgement wagon usually do not have the courage of their convictions, are often ill- informed, and frequently criticize by circumvention.

Brown frequently writes about what to do to "feel safe" in a conversation. I think we need to accept that we may not always feel "safe" in the sense that all parties will come out of a difficult conversation unscathed. ("Safe" proably needs to be defined differently than we typically think about that word. ("Psychological safety does not suggest an absence of pressure of problems.") We still need to pursue those fierce conversations and do that in the most compassionate and ethical way possible.
I have long struggled with trying to take care of others' emotions- wanting to fix difficult situations. It is very freeing to have learned how NOT to do that and to focus on setting boundaries around behaviors.

In the reading for this week, I reflected on the power that words of encouragement and celebration have had in my personal growth and accomplishments.
I feel really confident in working through issues with staff without blame, but my head jumps straight to blame when my boss calls me in and wants to know what happened. It is not that I want to point fingers, but when fingers are pointed at you, it can be difficult to maintain the strength of character to refrain.
