Often in a discussion board, one person comments, and then another person adds on a comment and says something positive, and then it ends. So, I think an online facilitator should have strong questioning skills to help move the conversation along in meaningful ways. I also like questions because it helps the person writing feel validated, like what they've said was heard. It creates an expectation of discussion instead of an expectation to merely post.

We need to be mindful that our online facilitation experience does not get bogged down by the technology used in the course. Each activity, group, interaction, tool, individual, blog, forum, should have a clearly defined purpose that engages the learner and deepens thinking. Courses too many integrations, resources, and activities do not encourage and motivate learners to participate-they tend to overwhelm.
