Native American groups lived throughout America, each developed their own culture and adapted to the environment

Europeans began colonizing in the Americans by the 1500s after Columbus “discovered” the New World in 1492

Europeans began to set up towns like Jamestown, create plantations, and pushed Native American off their land

Set up major trade networks bringing slaves from Africa and sending raw materials to Europe

European nations competed with each other for land and resources, leading to battles and wars in the New World

In the 1760s, the British government began passing several taxes on their colonies

Colonists rejected these taxes and British control and had events like the Boston Tea Party

Conflict began with the battle at Lexington and Concord between British Troops and Colonial Minutemen.  Soon the colonists wrote and signed the Declaration of Independence

After 5 years of war, the American Colonies, led by George Washington and aided by the French defeated the British and became in an independent nation

Revolution had many effects, like influencing other revolutions and giving Canada higher population as British left America to move there

Settlers began moving west in the early 1800s after the Louisiana Purchase and the mapping of the west by Lewis and Clark

Many people believed in the idea of Manifest Destiny.  This led to many conflicts with Native Americans

In the 19th century, US became more industrialized, staring with textile industry.  Led to high urbanization and creating of transcontinental railroad 

Due to issues of slavery and abolition, the Civil War started in the US in 1860

War lasted for 4 years with fierce fighting and eventual win by the Union over Confederacy

Reconstruction in the south took place after the war, but racial tensions, pushback against the government, and other issues, led to problems in Southern States

When WWI broke out in July of 1914,  US chooses policy of isolation

Two events that got the US involved in the war were the Sinking of the Lusitania and the Zimmerman Telegram

After the war, the US entered a period of great economic activity known as the Roaring 20’s

However, but Black Tuesday on October 29, 1929 the US had entered the Great Depression

Multiple things caused the Great Depression including over spending, borrowing too much money, and too much confidence in the economy

Franklin Roosevelt implements the New Deal to try and fix the economy, but Depression lasts till the end of WWII
