It would perhaps be better just to say 'To what extent did traditional Chinese painting shape Shining's style?' You would still have an argument (that it did substantially shape Shining's style) and a counter-argument (that there were still elements of his paintings that were 'western' in style - i.e influenced by his earlier training in Italy.)

What is your 'tentative conclusion' about Shining's style?

Another question to think about:
Why is it important to identify Shining's influences?
Lang Shining (Giuseppe Castiglione) was born in Milan, Italy, and studied painting sinceyouth, joining the Jesuit society in Genoa at the age of 19. When the Qing court in Chinamade a request for a Western painter, the Vatican in Rome and Castiglione chose Shining to go and also spread the faith. By the end of 1715, Castiglione had reached Beijing and worked for painting in the court. In addition, Shining served the Qing imperial household under the Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong emperors for nearly 51 years. In conclusion, Shining was an Italian, but he stayed in China for nearly 51 years because he was a Jesuit missionary as well as China court artist. Also, three Chinese emperors (Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong) all love his painting since he mixed traditional Chinese methods and Western methods in his painting. Therefore, traditional Chinese painting and Western painting impact on Shining’s style and this his solid integration of Chinese and Western styles.
