James Meredith integrates the University of Mississippi, 1962

James Meredith's initial attempt at applying to Oxford was denied. Not only were there legal obsticals but also mobs of unhappy citizens were trying their hardest to prevent his success. In the process of defending James, U.S. marshals and American soldiers were injured. In the end, James became the first African American to attend the University of Mississippi.

Martin Luther King Jr. gives his "I Have a Dream" speech during the March on Washington, 1963

On August 28, 1963, nearly 250,000 people gathered from all over the country to march for civil rights in Washington, DC. During this, Martin Luther King Jr. gave his "I Have a Dream" speech. Beside him, many others gave speeches that included the "Ten Demands" and John Lewis's statement, "we do not want our freedom gradually we want to be free now".

Much time was spent gathering demonstrators, especially children, to march a non-violent protest. Within 24 hours, the march went from simple arrests to violent hosing and dog attacks from police officers. This was broadcasted nationally and agrivated those all across the country, bringing more attention to the severity of segregation.

Civil Rights Act of 1964

A law proposed by President John F. Kennedy that pushed through opposition from southern Congressmen, officially signed by Lyndon B. Johnson. The Civil Rights Act was meant to end segregation in public areas while banning employment discrimination against not only race but also color, sex, religion, and national origin.

The Voting Rights Act of 1965

A law thats considered one of the most far reaching civil rights pieces in U.S. legislation, was signed into place by none other than Lyndon B. Johnson. This law was used to overcome any legal barriers at state level or lower, that prevented African Americans from properly exercising their right to vote that was constitutionalized by the 15th amendment.
