This is something we already do really but we use PARCC terms to reference these skills.

"Says" is finding “text evidence” which we have our students do.

"Does" is the “Analysis” which we have our students do.

"Means" is the “Claim” that comes from that evidence which is difficult for 8th grade students but we try and help them along this path. Typically, we will give them the claim and ask them to find the text evidence to prove it and analyze. We don't do this directly on the text usually, but have them pull the information out onto another sheet.

While we agree that common language is important, terms like "text evidence," "analysis," and "claim" are terms that we currently use and are the same terms used on the PARCC test.

For "Does," how would you go about explaining the process of articulating that to your freshmen? My students definitely get "says" as the literal text evidence, they can more often than not get to "means," the analysis - some need more guidance than others - but "does" has been a struggle. Then again, I'd imagine that this is really their first time using and seeing this breakdown.

I've been having them focus on "says" and "means" first, then thinking about "does" afterwards.

My interpretation or understanding of "Does" is the methods the author/content creator uses to lead the reader to what the author possibly "Means." Is this accurate?
