This concept means that we have to be aware of cultural differences of the peoples around the world. Not only do we have to be aware of the students that we teach, we have to instill a respect and understanding of the people and cultures around the world. I teach in a very diverse school with students from all over our planet. I as a teacher need to be aware of these differences and instruct in such a way to help my students with understanding people that are different than their own.

Biology is a great way to teach global citizenship as a large part of what we teach is the interconnectedness we as humans have with all life on our planet. We share our genes, ecosystems, and planet with other organisms and we need to teach that we need to be good stewards of our planet for future generations and coexist on our planet.

I teach in a school that has students from all over the world. Half the students are children of the military families stationed overseas and the other half are international students of families that work the oilfields in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
I like to have discussions on various topics with my students and have them express their viewpoints with others in the classroom. This allows my students to gain a viewpoint that they might not have considered before and it sometimes leads to a lively debate.

I think one way I can help my students with international understanding will be by teaching them where the advancements of science are coming from. Research and advancements of understanding are coming from all over the world! The internet and has been able to empower everyone to conduct research and gain insight on endless topics that affect all. I will have several projects throughout the year that make the students realize where and what impact research can have across the world.

One of the topics that I have during our ecology section is the problem with the ozone layer and the gap that has been created over Antarctica. It has taken an international effort to halt the production of ozone depleting substances such as CFC's. The erosion has halted and according to the latest article, the hole is shrinking. This highlights that as humans, we can come together and solve our worlds problems if given enough incentive.
