Kino: He is dignified, hardworking, impoverished native. He changed because he was nice and he cared about Juana and he did not want to change his life in anyway. After he found that pearl he became more aggressive and protective over the pearl and he became belligerent. (Quote) "He had said, 'I am a man,' and that meant certain things to Juana."

Juana: Strong, dignified, and a loving wife to Kino. She changed because in the beginning she was loving to the whole village. Then Coyotito got stung and they didn't have money for a doctor. Kino later found the "pearl of the world" the pearl brought evil into Juana's family and she knew it. Coyotito later was shoot by hunters looking for the family.

The pearl symbolizes Kino's greed, evil, and his native culture When Kino first finds the pearl, it is symbol of hope and salvation. But like wealth, the pearl represents all the evil in the world.
The song of the pearl: This is the song that Kino hears when he first finds the pearl. This song eventually turns into the song of evil that Kino hears when the doctor is near, or when the scorpion stung Coyotito.
The song of the evil: Means loss, destruction, disconnection and rage to Kino.
The song of family: strength and an inspiration.
