Weird Harold's

Weird Harold's is a record/costume shop near my grandma's house in Burlington, Iowa. We go there every time we visit my grandparents house. It's a unique little place with a lot of character which is part of why it has appealed to me. The ceiling has these elegant patterns, but then on the wall the paint is cracking and peeling off. They are kind of hard to see in the picture but the piece has two parts, the one on the left shows the outside of the building and some of the detail in the architecture. The one on the right gives a peek inside and I included the aspects that are most important to me and carry the most significance regarding my memories in Weird Harold's. I used color on the inside to try to show some of the shock when you first discover the place and everything in it because from looking at the building from the outside, it looks like any other building in Burlington's downtown. The notes around the edge are labeling the key areas with some little hints to memories I have in them. That's all!

"robot in arcade"

This piece is actually 2 years old, but i thought it would fit well in this class since my statement was 'how do i tell a story in one image using the background and characters?' the concept was that the Tv man in the center is a sort of cryptid style rare sight, sort of like bigfoot, and he's wandering through this arcade unaware to a passerby who managed to snap a picture of him, which is what you're seeing now. I always loved the concept of 'found footage' but i hated that it was all horror based, so this was my try at an anti-horror found footage, well more found photo.

Anxiety

This painting is about the anxiety and pressure that comes with dancing at competitions and nationals. I wanted to convey the thoughts going through her head, what she was feeling, and what the people around her told her while she was having anxiety. I wanted the background to be messy with several diffrent colors to show the noise and outside presures.

How can I use uncomfortable imagery to depict uniquely human experiences? (Sex, Shame, Graffiti)

Sexual shame is something that is only seen in humans. After so many people seeing me work and telling me its too graphic (therefore proving my point, thank you Mrs. Jury for the idea) I decided to graffiti my own painting. The owl feathers represent acceptance of a situation, while the placement of them represents disgrace or shame. the plastic bag over the head obviously shows shame. There is also a real mannequin head in the plastic bag to give it a more disturbing feel. Finally, the fact that the figure is black adds another layer because black women are the bud of this societal shame for natural things. This piece has a lot of layers but in my opinion, its the worst painting I've done so far.

This one takes things into a more individualistic take on these things, this time about myself. When I think about myself in any capacity I think in so many different shapes, looks, perspectives, and thoughts. It's how I see myself, how I can't help to be, and how I think others see me.
