When Laura's memory buttons from her family are missing, Laura's dad suggests that he could replace a missing button. Jane says that it's not replaceable. Laura hears this and thinks about how this connects to her mother.  Laura's mother isn't replaceable.  I think this is when Laura starts to take a liking to Jane. This is where the turning point takes place.

I think that the memory string could've symbolized Laura's mom and dad. For example, there was a button from Laura's dad, and a pin from her mother's prom dress.
