During 193 she was 17. She was born in Gaukönigshofen a small village in Germany. Her family was very poor. For her education she attended a trade school that was a university 25 miles from her hometown in Würzburg,Germany. She worked in Ochenfurt, doing clerical work for the government. In the mornings she would work at a school board and in the afternoons she worked at the administrative head of police departments.

When Hitler came into power in the 1930’s the laws he was making were becoming difficult for the Jews. By 1933 the Jews in her village were scared, by the changes that were going on. The restrictions the Jewish had were making things difficult because there were not enough food for them. Maries mother had her English citizenship, when Jewish people approached her mother asking her for help to teach them English in case of an opportunity to emigrate. Some even asked her mother to write letters for them to see if they could find a sponsor from another country to help them scape. While it was not easy for the Jews to scape because it costed money and a sponsor, many of the Jews in her village were wealthy and were able to scape but it was not possible for many of them as well.

She had went back to the office that day and retrieved the file. The next day she went down to the police office and spoke to the chief who was anti- nazi, after a while he confessed a lady had reported her mother.

Everyone even Cristian’s were afraid of nazis. The bombing became more severe. The Americans entered their village in Easter Sunday 1945. During that night they all took refuge in a cellar of a neighboring farmer. When the soldiers arrived they were calm they wouldn’t talk to them but they would still keep things calm. The Americans had set their headquarter in a bank in town, her first assignment was to accompany one of the soldiers to find office furniture. Marie worked for the American lieutenant for some time. When it was rumored that the Americans were going to leave and be replaced by the Russians people started to panic, because they heard how brutal the Red Army was. One of the soldiers promised Marie to take her back with him but she couldn’t due to her having her mother.
