Head of State: the highest-ranking constitutional position in a State. In Britain the King is Head of State, although most of his powers are given to Government Ministers.

His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition: the term given for the Opposition in the UK system. The Opposition is given special status within the House of Parliament, for example by its leader having guaranteed questions at PMQs. The current Opposition Party is the Labour Party.

House of Commons: the Lower Chamber of the UK Parliament. It currently has 650 elected Members of Parliament (MPs) who face election at least once every five years.

House of Lords: the Upper Chamber of the UK Parliament. It currently has nearly 800 unelectedmembers. Most are Life Peers who are appointed to the chamber by governments. Their titles cannot be inherited, so when they die, they can be replaced by another Life Peer. There are also 92 hereditary peers whose titles are inherited (they became peers when their father died) and 26 bishops.

Houses of Parliament: where government business is debated.

Hung Parliament: no party has a majority of seats in the House of Commons.

Coalition: the joining together of different political parties or groups for a particular purpose, usually for a limited time, or a government that is formed in this way.

Prime minister: the head of an elected government
