They had guns and horses most of the time to help them win the war. Most of the time, attacks on the other side happened during a surprise attack when the other side was not ready for it. War before WW1 also had to rely on mail from horses instead of telegraphs and phones like they did in WW1

McLean, A.

Trenches were most commonly and typically found in the Western Front in France and Belgium. They were holes dug into the ground that were very long and narrow. They were typically used by soldiers at the front line who could live in these trenches for days or even weeks. Trenches were specifically designed to protect soldiers from artillery and machine guns.

Dunleavy, Brian.

Even though trenches protect soldiers, it was also the cause of an enormous number of deaths. When soldiers would mount the trenches into what was known as “No Man's Land” they were exposed directly into enemy fire. Mounting the trenches became rarely effective and was a huge risk for mass casualties if attempted.

Dunleavy, Brian.
