Repetition is essentially more than just repeated sounds or words, there are more musical elements and sounds that go into a piece of work. I do agree with Ratliff and his theory of repetition because people do want to hear a variety of things while having the comfort of something they already know (the repetitive parts that are usually played at the beginning). This theory that repetition is way more than just one thing being repeated makes a lot of sense and I've never thought about it in that context. The same background tune, in the beginning, is once again played throughout the whole song, of course with added musical elements to give it that interest Ratliff talks about. They've created a more exciting song instead of just playing one continuous note over and over.
