A programmable logic controller (PLC) is an electronic device used in many industries to monitor and control building systems and production processes. Unlike PCs and smartphones, which are designed to perform any number of roles, a PLC is designed to perform a single set of tasks, except under real-time constraints and with superior reliability and performance.

Source: https://my.mouser.com/applications/industrial_application_logic_controller/

1. Wind turbine operation

PLCs are being used to help make wind turbines more efficient and experience less downtime. It’s crucial that wind turbines have accurate information regarding wind conditions to operate safely, as wind data is vital to record turbulence and protect the turbine. PLCs convert signals from the wind speed and direction sensors to better control the wind turbines. The data transmitted from the PLCs are also used for statistical analysis to predict failures before they occur.

2. The Smart Factory

The manufacturing process has become a lot more efficient thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT), intelligent automation, advanced robotics and other Smart Factory initiatives. Despite the rapid changes in technology, PLCs continue to play a vital role in manufacturing and act as a central processor for all real time decisions. For instance, a PLC sends robust data, including sensor performance and other data, that can be integrated with cloud computing to show a more holistic picture, i.e. a collection of “big data.” Analysis tools can then help plant managers and others to better leverage resources, batch scheduling of jobs, logistics, supplier timing and other functions that are critical to create more efficient manufacturing processes.

3. Virtual modeling

Plant managers require virtual modelling systems in order to create an accurate floor plan. In doing so, manufacturers can improve their operations across their entire value chain, from design and engineering to sales, production, and service. PLCs can be used in virtual modelling to simulate how a new piece of equipment will perform when installed. That way, manufacturers can make the right adjustments for a successful implementation without resorting to costly changes.

Source: https://www.plctechnician.com/news-blog/Important-Uses-of-PLCs-in-Manufacturing

A PLC is an industrial control computer system which continuously monitors the state of input devices, processes this input using custom programs, the output of which is used to control the states of output devices. The design of PLC is such that it can withstand harsh industrial operations and PLC can rightly be called as a special type of computer for industrial control systems. PLCs are robust in construction and have special features such as reliable control, easy-to-use hardware, sequential control, counters and timers.

Use of PLCs in Industrial Automation and Industrial Networks

Industrial Automation uses control devices and systems like robotics and computers to automate industrial machinery and their operations which eliminates the need for human operators. Industrial automation saves time, eliminates human errors, cuts costs and improves performance. Once we program PLCs, they perform events in sequence, triggered by the stimuli called inputs. The inputs are received through time delays or counted occurrences. To keep pace with the increasing demands of industrial standards, PLCs are designed to withstand extreme vibration, heat, humidity, temperatures and noise.

PLCs are of great use in various industries such as automobile industry, steel industry, chemical industry, energy sectors and so on. Based on the technologies followed in industries, the application of PLCs varies. Let us discuss a few industries where PLCs help in automation and control.

Paper Industry
In the paper industry, PLCs are used in various applications including machine control and monitoring. For example, PLC controls and automates the speed of the machine that prints books or offset web pages.

Travel Industry

In the travel industry, such as in airports, PLCs are used to operate lifts and monitor safety control systems.

Glass Industry

PLCs have been used in the glass industry for decades to control material ratios and to process production of large sheets of glass.

A PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLER (PLC) is an industrial computer control system that continuously monitors the state of input devices and makes decisions based upon a custom program to control the state of output devices. Almost any production line, machine function, or process can be greatly enhanced using this type of control system. However, the biggest benefit in using a PLC is the ability to change and replicate the operation or process while collecting and communicating vital information.

Source : https://www.amci.com/industrial-automation-resources/plc-automation-tutorials/what-plc/

EXAMPLES OR APPLICATION WHERE PLC CAN BE IMPLENTED

1) Road Traffic Signals

It is difficult to picture our modern world without traffic signals. Those three colored streetlights are used and understood by people all around the world. This simple but ingenious application of the PLC has a long history in major cities and small towns all around the world, since their first application traffic control in 1926 in London, England. These traffic lights, that we take for granted every day are monitored and controlled by PLC hardware and software, running dependably and without fuss 24/7/365 days a year.

Have you ever noticed when you travel at rush hours on a busy street, it is an entirely different experience than at low traffic periods? If a pedestrian pressed the button to cross at an intersection, how does that affect flow of the vehicles? Do traffic lights actually “see” an emergency vehicle and allow it to blaze through an intersection? Using emergency vehicle transponders, sensors, and PLC circuits to control the traffic lights, traffic flow is coordinated and managed to allow for more timely and direct rescue services.

2) The Automatic Car Wash

In any busy metropolis where car traffic is present, there are many gas stations accompanied by automatic or “touch-less” car wash stations. As you take a trip inside the touch-free carwash, you will find the water mixed with cleaning solutions, blasting the surface of the vehicle and spinning wipers for scrubbing. Every process is calculated and carefully controlled, from how many litres/gallons of soap is used, to the length of time those tall rotating wipers spin. These time and work saving services are completely automated by PLCs, with little human interaction other than a press of button at the entrance.

3) The Elevator
The elevator industry is on the rise; pun intended. In every multifloor building, an elevator is present, no matter how short or tall. Recall those times when the elevator door opens and you step inside to find that it was headed in the wrong direction? Has this ever made you wonder who or what is controlling it to do so? To give you a clue, there is a defined program running in a PLC that detects the different floors requesting the elevator and directing the elevators in their required direction. These programs are sets of ladder logic instructions that are loaded into the PLC controlling the lift. The controllers are usually not located in the elevator itself but at a specific location on the roof of the building or in a nearby control room. I once naively believed that summoning an elevator to my floor was performed on a first come, first serve basis but this is not the case, if the elevator is already in motion. Most elevators are programmed and controlled by PLCs to take the most optimized route through any pending button calls and make their directional decisions based on that.

SOURCE : https://www.gbctechtraining.com/blog/PLC-Applications-in-our-Everyday-Lives

Based on my understanding, PLC stand for Programmable Logic Controller which is a computer specially designed to operate on harsh industrial environment such as extreme temperatures, wet, dry and or dusty conditions. It is a digital computer used for industrial automation to automate different electro - mechanical processes. It consists of a programmed microprocessor whose program is written on a computer and later downloaded via a cable to the PLC. This program is stored in a non-volatile PLC memory.

For example PLC for controlling the traffic signal of a traffic light. Once programmed the times and color for each signals , the PLC then will perform a sequence of events triggered by stimuli referred as inputs, the input is refer to the program that we write on a computer then downloaded via cable to PLC. It receives the stimuli through delayed actions such as counted occurrences or time delays.
Another example is implement a PLC to control the signal of an elevator .The function of a standard elevator we implement it inside our coding and then we transfer the coding via cable into a PLC. The PLC received the input then it will perform the action when action is detected.
URL:
https://www.motioncontrolonline.org/content-detail.cfm/Motion-Control-News/What-s-a-PLC-Programmable-Logic-Controller/content_id/2681
https://www.mobileautomation.com.au/plc-industrial-application/#:~:text=Other%20examples%20of%20PLC%20programming,closed%20loop%20textile%20shrinkage%20systems.

To make it simpler a PLC/Programmable Logic Controller can work as a special computer device used for industrial control systems in many industries such as oil refineries, manufacturing lines, conveyor systems and so on. PLCs provides a flexible way to "soft wire" the components together and control devices.

As for the example where PLC can be implemented, in my opinion I think one of a good example where it can be implemented is In Food and Beverage Industry. In the Food and beverage industries in order to overcome the shortcomings of manual filling process, bottle filling task, automatic segregation and directing of materials are carried out by machines. All sequential and repeated operations in this industry are normally carried out using PLCs. PLC Integration in Manufacturing Assembly line of the food and beverage industry has resulted in increased speed, accuracy and effectiveness of the production has reduced worker cost and operation cost, packaging time and the risk of hazards. PLC is very useful in this field because it can benefits us in many ways so I think it is a wise choice to keep exploring and inovating on PLC functionality in order to benefits us more in the upcoming future.

URL : https://www.agaraminfotech.com/blogs/2018/plc-integration-in-manufacturing-assembly-line

These controllers can automate a specific process, machine function, or even an entire production line.

The PLC receives information from connected sensors or input devices, processes the data, and triggers outputs based on pre-programmed parameters.
Depending on the inputs and outputs, a PLC can monitor and record run-time data such as machine productivity or operating temperature, automatically start and stop processes, generate alarms if a machine malfunctions, and more. Programmable Logic Controllers are a flexible and robust control solution, adaptable to almost any application.
For example PLC has been implemented in the washing machine, nowadays because of people are living in such a tight schedule they don’t have time to wash their clothes manually as well as it is much of a time consuming. In such cases PLC based washing machine can be used which is easy ,reliable and time saving. Such washing machine once given a instruction performs its task efficiently. In this automated washing machine DC Motor is used which is capable of working at variable speeds as per one’s requirement. The main purpose of the project is to have automated washing device which washes clothes and sheets without any human intervention. The term is applied to machines that use water as a primary cleaning solution, as opposed to dry cleaning. Washing includes immersing, dipping, rinsing, soaking in water or other liquids, usually accompanied by soap, detergent or bleach. The simplest machines may simply agitate clothes in water while switched on; automatic machine may

URL :
https://unitronicsplc.com/what-is-plc-programmable-logic-controller/
https://www.irjet.net/archives/V5/i10/IRJET-V5I10238.pdf

A programmable logic controller (PLC), or programmable controller is an industrial digital computer which has been ruggedized and adapted for the control of manufacturing processes, such as assembly lines, or robotic devices, or any activity that requires high reliability control and ease of programming and process fault diagnosis.

They were first developed in the automobile industry to provide flexible, ruggedized and easily programmable controllers to replace hard-wired relays, timers and sequencers. Since then they have been widely adopted as high-reliability automation controllers suitable for harsh environments. A PLC is an example of a “hard” real-time system since output results must be produced in response to input conditions within a limited time, otherwise unintended operation will result.

Example or application where PLC can be implemented:

1. Automatic Doors

Do you recall a time not too long ago when a person might be hit by an automatic door swinging open? Luckily today, there are better PLC controls with better built-in sensor on both sides of the door to prevent such occurrences. There are a many ways for an automatic door to function but in general they operate by way of a detector, for example a beam of light being broken, causing the system to identify something in front of, or between, the doors.

2. Conveyer Belts

When paying for your purchases at your neighborhood supermarket, the lowly conveyer belt moves your purchases into the reach of a friendly cashier. Imagine the inconvenience, if a plc was not there helping control the belt, making the process of checking out simple and painless. Bigger conveyer belts can be found in airports where they transport people or put your luggage on carousel until you claim it. There are even giant conveyor belts that transfer construction materials. Conveyor belts are also used in most manufacturing plants due to their convenience and uniform motion.

3. Roller Coasters

Many people love exploring new heights and pushing themselves towards the thrill of a near death experience, on you guessed it, the PLC controlled roller coaster. Whether or not you scream at the top of your lungs is a different story.
Typically, the PLC control in roller coasters is for bringing it upwards before the big drop. It is also used for safety measures so that the cars do not reverse in direction. Imagine travelling backwards on the huge dip; it wouldn’t be as thrilling as the gravitational force pulling down.
Almost everywhere you look today, PLCs are playing an important part controlling the technology that supports our hi-tech lifestyles. From traffic lights to roller coasters they provide us with robust and reliable control mechanisms that improve our lives. PLC technicians work to maintain and support these technologies, providing a critical service that keeps us safe and moving through our busy lives.

Source

1. https://engineering.eckovation.com/plc-based-final-year-projects/

2. https://www.gbctechtraining.com/blog/PLC-Applications-in-our-Everyday-Lives

Programmable Logic Controller or PLC is ubiquitous in process and manufacturing industries today. Initially built to replace electromechanical relay systems, the PLC offers a simpler solution for modifying the operation of a control system. Rather than having to rewire a large bank of relays, a quick download from a PC or programming device enables control logic changes in a matter of minutes or even seconds.

A PLC is an industrial-grade digital computer designed to perfrom control functions especially for industrial applications. The majority of PLCs today are modular, allowing the user to add an assortment of functionality including discrete control, analog control, PID control, position control, motor control, serial communication and high-speed networking. Compared to older technologies, the PLC is easier to troubleshoot, more reliable, more cost-effective, and far more versatile. Modicon shortened from modular digital controller, is both the name of the first PLC product and the brand that invented it.

Example or Application where PLC can be implemented:

PLCs are used in various applications in industries such as the steel industry, automobile industry, chemical industry and the energy sector. The scope of PLCs dramatically increases based on the development of all the various technologies where it is applied.

A distributed control system comprised of PLC in its user mode and a configuration software are used in the industry’s production and management processes. The PLC in particular, controls ball milling, coal kiln and shaft kiln. Other examples of PLC programming applications that are in use in various industries today include water tank quenching systems in the aerospace sector, filling machine control system in the food industry, – industrial batch washing machine control and closed loop textile shrinkage systems.

PLC is also used in the coal-fired boiler fan change-over system in hospitals, corrugation machine control system and silo feeding as well as injection moulding control systems in the plastic industry.

The programmable logic controllers at Mobile Automation includes a huge variety from various top industry manufacturers such as Allen-Bradley and Omron.

PLCs are robust in construction and have special features such as reliable control, easy to use hardware, sequential control, counters and timers.

Here are some examples of everyday mechanical systems that are controlled by PLCs:

1) Road Traffic Signals

It’s difficult to picture our modern world without traffic signals. Those three colored streetlights are used and understood by people all around the world. This simple but ingenious application of the PLC has a long history in major cities and small towns all around the world, since their first application traffic control in 1926 in London, England. These traffic lights, that we take for granted every day are monitored and controlled by PLC hardware and software, running dependably and without fuss 24/7/365 days a year

PLC that detects the different floors requesting the elevator and directing the elevators in their required direction.

4) Automatic Doors

PLC controls with better built-in sensor on both sides of the door to prevent such occurrences.

PLC stands for “Programmable Logic Controller”. A PLC is a computer specially designed to operate reliably under harsh industrial environments such as extreme temperatures, wet, dry, and/or dusty conditions. It is used to automate industrial processes such as a manufacturing plant’s assembly line, an ore processing plant, or a wastewater treatment plant.

PLCs share many features of the personal computer you have at home. They both have a power supply, a CPU (Central Processing Unit), inputs and outputs (I/O), memory, and operating software (although it’s a different operating software). The biggest differences are that a PLC can perform discrete and continuous functions that a PC cannot do, and a PLC is much better suited to rough industrial environments. A PLC can be thought of as a ‘ruggedized’ digital computer that manages the electromechanical processes of an industrial environment.

PLCs play a crucial role in the field of automation, using forming part of a larger SCADA system. A PLC can be programmed according to the operational requirement of the process. In the manufacturing industry, there will be a need for reprogramming due to the change in the nature of production. To overcome this difficulty, PLC-based control system were introduced.

good example or application where PLC can be implemented :

Paper Industry

- As we know, paper mills are factories that produce many products at a time. such as paper, it requires thin and evenly cut pieces. Human labor cannot produce paper in such a short period of time. Machines that use plc will work to deliver a neat and accurate cut in a short amount of time. For example, at a time when the factory will produce half a million volumes of paper to be packaged, workers will use the PLC method to ensure that the paper is produced properly.

URL:
https://www.electrical4u.com/programmable-logic-controllers/

GROUP A
PLC CAN BEIMPLEMENTED : An Ordinary Pull in and Park Automatic Car Wash
What exactly does automation mean? Automation is the use of largely automatic equipment in a system of manufacturing or other production process. This typically includes the use of PLC, sensors, robots, and motors among many other things depending on the automated process. Almost any process can become automated.

A simple, everyday example of automation would be an ordinary pull in and park automatic car wash. Almost any process can become automated. Each industrial process needs to be started by some sort of input. That input can be a sensor, pushbutton, switch, among many other possibilities. Typically a person will start the process with one of these input devices or it could be a sensor that detects an object automatically. Those inputs will go to a PLC to which will then make decisions based on how it was programmed.

The PLC will then activate whatever output the program says to run. An output can be anything that does work such as a motor, solenoid, heater, or a light. In an automated process, that output will typically programmed as an input to the PLC and combined with other input devices or programming to keep the process running. With this programming, it can act like a chain reaction with one output device starting before the next is allowed to run. This is also called sequential starting.

Automation has to have many aspects working together in order to function properly. An automated process will continue its cycle until it receives a stop signal. That can come from a physical input such as a stop button or sensor, or something programmed like a timer. Automation is an automatic process, typically controlled by computers and sensors. There is usually very little human intervention. Input devices, such as sensors and switches, will work with a controller or PLC to activate output devices like motors or other machinery. The PLC will advance as it was programmed.

link: https://realpars.com/what-is-process-automation/

Most hybrid cars currently marketed to consumers have both conventional gasoline and electric motors, with the ability to power the vehicle by either one independently or in tandem. The primary important tasks in vehicle manufacturing are design of components, control mechanism, specification of components, among others. These activities are crucial and require an in-depth research.

This research applied Programmable Logic Controller for light Hybrid Electric Vehicle power train control strategy of the two drive power sources. This Research work emphasis's on components layout design, drive mode control mechanism, and drive train components specifications which are used in the design development of Siemens LOGO!Basic PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) controlled light Hybrid Electric Vehicle simulator. This included power train components design by adopting them from Baby FIAT 500 model vehicle power train components as per the intended running speed drive range of the simulator. The control program developed enabled the two drive power sources i.e. the motor and IC (internal combustion) engine to work automatically.

PLC is stand for programmable logic controller or programmable controller is computer with a microprocessor but has no keyboard, mouse or monitor. It also known as industrial digital computer which has been ruggedized and adapted for the control of manufacturing processes, such as assembly lines, or robotic devices, or any activity that requires high reliability, ease of programming and process fault diagnosis. It scans the state/status of inputs (which are connected to sensors, push buttons, safety devices etc.). The logic/program stored inside its memory is processed. The logic is commonly made in Ladder language which is based on relay diagrams but there are other languages also, such as FBD (Functional Block diagram, an Electronics person will easily follow this). The Outputs status is updated as per the program is made. And these all three steps happen in one scan cycle and that’s how PLC works.

Example of PLC can be implemented (bottle filling machine)

This is one of the important application of PLC in the bottle filling industry where we want our the bottles, which move on the conveyor belt, to be automatically detected in the proper position and fill the desired liquid. The machine will implement a control program that detects the position of a bottle via a limit switch then waits for 0.5 secs, and then fills the bottle until a photodetector detects the filled condition of the bottle. After the bottle is filled, the buzzer sounds and the control program will again wait for 0.7 secs. before moving to the next bottle.

https://automationforum.in/t/continuous-bottle-filling-system-using-plc/3937

PLCs are used in many industries and machines. Unlike general-purpose computers, the PLC is designed for multiple inputs and output arrangements, extended temperature ranges, immunity to electrical noise, and resistance to vibration and impact. Programs to control machine operation are typically stored in battery-backed or non-volatile memory.

1. https://personalymda.wordpress.com/2011/06/15/programable-logic-controller/

2. http://weeluntan.blogspot.com/2015/12/pengenalan-sistem-programmable-logic.html

3. https://docplayer.info/45703813-Lift-elevator-escalator.html

4. https://www.mobileautomation.com.au/plc-industrial-application/#:~:text=Other%20examples%20of%20PLC%20programming,closed%20loop%20textile%20shrinkage%20systems.

HANI SYAHIRAH BINTI ZAMBRI
D20182086311
GROUP A

Link :

1. https://www.gbctechtraining.com/blog/PLC-Applications-in-our-Everyday-Lives

2. https://study.com/academy/lesson/programmable-logic-controllers-plc-in-industrial-networks-definition-applications-examples.html
