Cruise ships have affected people in a number of ways. Cruise passengers interacting with locals in stop points gives information to both parties about culture and lifestyle. But this tourism can also have damaging effects in that locals see the tourists from cruise ships as a different class, leading to social tension. Foreign tourists also sometimes bring in ideas that seem normal to them, but unusual to the tourists. These ideas can sometimes be unhealthy for the locals.

Cruises, like most forms of transportation, run on fossil fuels, mainly because it's the most time efficient way to move such a huge vessel. Therefore, like most forms of transportation, they have the unfortunate effect of raising CO2 emissions. Cruise ships being on a much larger scale, however, means they create much more pollution than other forms of transport. This is one of the few traits that cruise ships have carried since their original form from steamships in the 20th century.
