      <title>Transmission in Music by </title>
      <link>https://padlet.com/06daniela_hernandez/6o7gyrluh86d</link>
<description>Ratliff explains that there is a debate as to whether emotion in music has a function or if it’s just simply part of the music itself. Ratliff explains that an extreme form of emotion in music is transmission. He explains that transmission is when a musician puts his or her whole life into their music. They constantly practice their music and put so much of their time and energy into it. It’s when music has become a part of their life. Therefore, every time they play it’s a form of transmission. Transmission not only occurs with the musician but also with the listener. It occurs when the listener understands the transmission put in by the musician. Ratliff includes an example of transmission when he states that Sufi masters “use their powers of intent to send energy forth to their students. Students or seekers can feel the power of transmission by seeking to let go of their own existence and perceive the essence of their god. Receiving transmission (or tawajjuh) in the Sufi tradition has been compared to falling into a sea—a pleasant form of drowning, all-consuming, all-immersing.” I agree with Ratliff’s explanation of transmission because it states how hard people work and how something such as music can become a part of their lives. As an example of transmission Ratliff includes The Maze song “The Morning After” It’s a about a man who is explaining the emotions he’s feelings after cheating on his wife. He explains what he feels before and after he’s cheated. Stating that it felt good in the moment but also the aftermath and all the people he is going to hurt. This is an excellent example of transmission because “giving more than you need to is an act of transmission. So is exposing doubt through music, admitting that we don’t have the answers or the plan, writing words embodying that lack of a plan, singing in a way that embodies those words.” Another song that would serve as an example of transmission is Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of you” it explains how the divorce of her parents has made her afraid of love. She doesn’t want to commit the same mistakes her parents did. It has made her afraid of her future mistakes trusting the people around her. This is an example of transmission because Clarkson put so much of her life in to that song. She showed how hurt she truly is through her lyrics and her performance. The listeners can immediately notice how hurt and scared she is for the future. </description>
