My experience as a Bilingual Student by Peter Dart

Here's a place to share what positive experiences you have had as a Bilingual Immersion student at Broadrick. Tell us a little about when you started, how many years you have been in the program, what improvements you have seen, how you communicate with others at school and how you have used your Mandarin outside of school. Look at the example first so you see an example of how to write your post!

I've been a part of the program since I arrived at Broadrick in Year 2. I'd never learnt Mandarin before so at first it was really tricky and hard. But over the year, I got to practise a lot and it helped that the other kids in my class were able to help me and talk in Chinese too.
We do lots of different activities in mandarin lessons like reading, singing, art and lots of talking to each other and the teacher.
Over the years, I have seen my chinese improve because I can actually talk a lot to my friends in mandarin and have real conversations. We even use chinese to talk outside the classroom when talking about other things like our weekends or shows we watch.
When I go out to dinner at a chinese restaurant, I try to impress my mum and dad by speaking chinese and one day I hope we can travel to china so I can use it there too! In highschool, I will definitely continue learning mandarin because I think I have gotten better and I enjoy being able to speak in multiple languages.

In year one I started writing mandarin and I thought it was really really hard but I learned quickly and now that I'm in year 5 I still have trouble but only a bit of trouble but you always learn by mistakes. I've even been doing great in English and Math but we’re here about Mandarin. I loved all my mandarin teachers here in brodrick road etonhouse. In year 5 your Mom and Dad also have to buy you a new computer.

Mandarin in the brodrick road etonhouse is so fun.

Now I know almost every word. And I know how to use 3D animations in ICT. I use Mandarin to help people who only know Mandarin to help them. Mandarin will be one of the most used languages on earth.

I started to learn Mandarin when I was in N2 in another school I was not sure if I was going to be able to learn it but I turned out just fine. The best part about learning Mandarin is learning about its history and culture since its very interesting to learn about it. Improvements I have seen are starting to become more fluent and be able to speak more Mandarin while learning as well. I can communicate with others in school using Mandarin by learning in a lesson and also be able to speak to people who doesn't really know English and knows more Chinese. I think Chinese can help me in the future maybe if I have to go to China for maybe a business trip to China I can speak Mandarin to people who only speak Chinese. Some advice I would give is to never give up because I didn't think I could do it when I was in N2 and now I can speak Chinese quite well.

I've been in this program for 6 years, my first bilingual class was k1 comets. I think the best parts are the celebrations like Chinese new year, mid-autumn festival etc. and activities we do for these festivities like, calligraphy, painting etc. I noticed that I improved a lot in my hand writing and I can write paragraphs and recognize more words then I could in year 2. Being bilingual has helped me a lot because now I can communicate to people who may not know how to speak English and I can read Chinese books. When I was younger I used to watch Chinese cartoons but I couldn't understand an amount of words, but as I grew up I learnt more and more words in Mandarin and now I can understand all the things my favorite character says. My past teachers were Yu laoshi, Entong laoshi, Baihe laoshi, Sun laoshi and now Lou laoshi. I enjoy being in their class as they have helped me a lot to undrestand different phrases and characters. I could use Mandarin in the future when I travel to China and other countries who use mandarin as their main language.

↦ Ilaria

I started Chinese around 7-8 years ago (when I was 2 or 3 years old) and joined EtonHouse in Year 2. I like when we get to do Chinese art and crafts like making lanterns for Mid-Autumn Festival or Chinese brush paintings or calligraphy. We get to play fun games like Quizlet Live, Kungfu Xiongmao, etc. In Year 2 I remember that even just writing a sentence was super hard and I had to copy and look for writing a word. Now I can memorise words and get the majority of the words in my spelling test correct. Before I could only understand short and easy sentences and now I can read complex Chinese idiom stories. I can have conversations in mandarin with my teachers, classmates and even people outside school. I remember that a few years ago, I travelled to China with my dad and we went to a restaurant. I spoke Chinese in front of a man and he was very impressed. He asked me where I was from and he was surprised and he praised me that an Indian who could speak a totally different language so fluently. During our Year 6 assembly, Wolverines sang a Chinese song together and we explained our Mandarin UoI. I really enjoyed practising the Chinese song.

↝Swaraa

I have been in the program since I joined Etonhouse in K1. The best part about being a bilingual student is that we get to learn about Chinese culture and we can also communicate in different languages. We can also help others that don't know the language. In K1 mandarin classes ,I remember we were learning how to write numbers in mandarin, and now we are learning how to write more complex words and sentences and reading harder books such as idiom stories. I think learning mandarin including communication skills because if you are confused with a word or something, you can always ask the teacher. You also need communication skills because if you want to be good at mandarin, then you need to know how to communicate in mandarin.
I remember one time, I was on a taxi with my dad but the taxi driver couldn't speak English and could only speak Chinese and my dad could not understand what he was saying so I helped him translate what the taxi driver was saying. For future students, I recommend starting off with simple words and sentences. You shouldn't push yourself too hard and don't expect to be a pro at mandarin after a day. Learning a new language takes time. You should focus on Mandarin and not try to learn a lot of languages
at once.
~ Chloe

I have been part of the bilingual program for 7 years since I arrived at EtonHouse half way through Year 2. In my experience as a bilingual student I have progressed from easy characters and copying different characters to be able to write a mandarin book and write complicated mandarin words I can even read complicated Chinese idiom books. In Chinese we learn about Chinese culture and we also learn about cities in China and festivals. I communicate to people outside school like in Chinese restaurants I also can communicate with my mandarin teachers and even with my fathers employees. Some advice I would give new students in the bilingual program is that in the first year it is going t be hard but eventually you get used to it and it becomes easier. If you learn mandarin you might even impress your parents. Today was our class assembly and we sang a whole song in Chinese and you can do that to if you try really hard. Learning Chinese is really fun you play so many games like Quizlet and Kongfu panda and little teacher. Now I am able to communicate fluently with anyone Chinese and I can even talk in China.
-Henry

I think bilingual education is good because you get to learn mandarin and let’s say you go to a place where most people speak mandarin and you have no idea what they are saying if you learn how to speak mandarin and it is the second most spoken language in the world. Bilingual is really fun all those games we play I have become better at speaking it over the year and I can write it as well I can also understand it and read it and it is cool learning English and Mandarin for new students coming to bilingual you should speak Mandarin during the Mandarin lesson because it makes more sense right I mean speaking English in Mandarin lesson does not really make sense and it is really fun and I have been in bilingual food 6 years Sophia Fisher

The best part of being in the bilingual program is learning new things in a new and fun way.
