B2 - Social Innovation Challenge by Nally

1)Start to write down all that you know, including your guesses (= your hypotheses) about each part (box) of your project/business idea.
2)Identify your riskiest assumption. If you have a new project/business idea, you will probably need to start with Box A. Do you genuinely understand your customers´ underlying needs?
3)Start the experiment to derisk your riskiest assumption and to validate your hypotheses.
4)Keep on until all your hypotheses are validated and you have either found a sound project/ business model, pivot, or concluded that you better do something else.

a) What positive impact will your solution make? What are the positive effects of your product on society, the planet, and the economy of your organization? How can you maximize these? Are there unintended consequences to consider?

- Our solution will be able to help consumers find alternatives to single-use plastic. The creation and production of new reusable products can help in the decrease single-use plastics found in our oceans. This will likewise decrease plastic waste as a whole and be better for the planet in the long-run. To maximize the creation of this product, its marketing towards the public is one of the most important things to consider.

Moreover, by providing an "entryway" into the circular economy, we can empower those with low incomes in a way that they can no longer be tied to buying goods in sachets due to budget constraints. Existing solutions have failed to take into account its negative externalities especially against those living in poverty. For a developing country like the Philippines, it is important that the solutions to be implemented here are localized in the sense that it revolves around our local context wherein a significant portion of our population is dependent on goods packaged in single-use plastics to survive within the limits of their daily wage.

During our talk with Mr. Gersava, he opened our eyes to the fact that, while poverty is an important factor to consider when localizing the solutions to the plastic problem, the goal should not be about making plastic alternatives cheaper just because a significant portion of our population lives under poverty. The focus on making alternatives cheap might result in another negative unintended consequence as this can exacerbate exploitation. Instead, a better approach would be to empower the masses to the point where they would not have to choose between survival (access to basic necessities) and social responsibility to preserve the planet.

For many, goods packaged in sachets and other single-use plastics are the only way for them to gain access to their daily needs. To ensure that no one gets left behind as we progress towards sustainability, we must empower this sector so that they would not have to choose between survival and saving the planet. Given that 2 out of 4 of the group members reside in the South and are familiar with the area, the group will be focusing on Muntinlupa as the community for the project. This is to ensure that it the process and overall project is well monitored.

Therefore, there is a need to somewhat deflect from existing solutions. If existing solutions work in the Philippines, it should have addressed this issue a long time ago. At the very least, our social innovation should build on existing solutions to make it easier to apply the lives of all Filipinos; not just those who can afford to change their lifestyle. This way, we can create a bigger impact in the collective effort to tackle the plastic problem.

The combination of the government's effort to stop the spread of COVID-19 along with our own fears of getting the virus and passing it onto our loved ones has increased our reliance on single-use plastics. We have resorted to take-outs that force people to use disposable cutleries, cups, and straws. Additionally, we have become dependent on home deliveries for everything we want and need. The problem with these deliveries is that, more often than not, they are packaged in single-use plastics. In some cases, the goods delivered are wrapped in multiple layers of bubble wrap to protect the products during transport.

Our group believes that, to ensure the commitment of everyone to a more sustainable way of living, they have to be empowered to take charge of their own decisions and not be forced into a lifestyle simply due to economic constraints. Our group intends to do this by setting up upcycling seminars for those living in poverty to give them more income opportunities. We foresee two benefits from these seminars. First, because it is expected that they won’t earn that initially, they would not need to give up buying goods in single-use plastics right away. We recognize the importance of “tingi” goods to their survival. Instead, they could turn them into something that is useful for them. In addition to this, upcycled goods can be sold to others as well. This brings us to the second benefit which is to empower them to take part in the circular economy.

Unlike other efforts where plastic alternatives are simply introduced with the hope that marketing tactics would encourage everyone to commit to a more sustainable lifestyle, we are advocating for an approach that is more feasible in the Philippine context; acknowledging their economic constraints.

One of the drivers of plastic-use in the country are major corporations that produce the sachets itself. Given that plastic is the cheapest material, corporations gravitate towards its use to ensure low costs and low prices. Given the ever growing problem on plastic-use and its prominent cons to the environment, corporations have slowly decreased the use of plastic in their products. For example, companies such as Nestle have switched out plastic straws for environmentally-friendly paper straws for their drinks such as Chuckie and Bear Brand.

Source:
https://news.abs-cbn.com/business/08/14/20/nestl-philippines-shifts-to-paper-straws-for-ready-to-drink-products

One of the main things being done by local NGOs is the creation of reusable products to avoid the purchase of single-use plastic. This can be seen most frequently in the form of straws. Large companies such as Starbucks and Serenitea have recently started the promotion of bamboo or paper straws and make the purchase of reusable straws convenient for its customers. Moreover, NGOs such as the Bamboo Company bring this a step further by creating plantable toothbrushes and the like in order to eliminate plastic waste and promote tree-planting as well.
