Five Socs (a gang that consists of upper class people that hate the greasers,a gang of lower class peopl and the gang Pony is in.) The Socs circle around him, and ask Pony if he needs a haircut. One Soc takes out a blade and threatens Pony. One Soc happens to be Cherry's boy friend and the one that jumped Johnny.  The girls end up leaving with the Socs, and no fight happens. Pony and Johnny lay in the park and look at the stars, then they fall asleep. They wake up in middle of the night and Pony goes home. Darry yells at him and then slaps him. Pony and Johnny decide to run away. Dally gives the two young greasers a loaded gun, a change of clothes, money, and instructions to get the 3:15 train to Windrixville, go up to the old abandoned church on Jay mountain. Johnny comes back with a weeks supply of baloney, two loafs of bread, a box of matches, a paper back copy of Gone With The Wind, a deck of cards, and some peroxide. Johnny cuts his hair and washes it and Pony cuts and bleaches his hair. Dally takes them back to the church and when they get there they see that the church is on fire. there's a group of children up there and they realize that there's two children stuck in the burning building. Pony and Johnny race into the building to save the 2 kids. they get the kids out safley but as they're getting out Pony's jakcet catches fire and dally hits him so hard that he gets knocked out. Johnny is still in the buliding when a pice of burning timber comes crashing down and hits him hard in the back. Dally runs in there to save Johnny. Pony and Dally make it to the hospital with minor injuries but Johnny is not so lucky. as they are waiting in the waiting room to hear how Johnny is doing Soda and Darry show up. Pony and Soda hug and then Pony sees Darry standing by the door way. Darry doesn't hug him he just stands in the doorway. Pony is ready for him to start yelling but the he sees Darry crying. Darry yelled at them and said that Pony was in no place to be harassed. the reporters backed of real quick because Darry is big. Soda really like the attention he was doing weird poses and funny faces for them. Johnny was in really bad condition. The doctors said that Johnny probably wouldn't make it. Darry carried Pony back to the house because he feel asleep in the truck and the next day Two-bit and Steve came over the next morning. Two-bitstarted making fun of Pony's haircut and the started talking about the rumble. Johnny realized that he didn't want to die because he was only 16 and he had so much that he wanted to and so much that he hadn't seen yet. They went to go see Dally who was arguing with a nurse because they wouldn't let him smoke. Tim came by to see Dally. Two-bit took out a big black knife and gave it to Dally who said that they had to win the rumble for Johnny and for the gang. Two-bit got worried about Pony because Pony was looking sick and was awfully hot. Pony took 5 aspirins then went to shower and change clothes. They always got spaced up before a rumble because they wanted to show that they could clean up nicely too. Soda said that he liked fights. Darry had concerns about Pony because he was looking sick and he didn't want Pony in the rumble but Pony said he had to be in the rumble for Johnny. The gang showed up to the rumble singing and doing acrobatics that Darry taught them from his course at the Y. Darry said that if the police showed up Pony and Soda were to get out before the police could jail them because he didn't want them to get sent to a boys home. Tim's gang showed up and the boys from Brumly showed up too. soon after the rumble started Dally showed up with one arm bandaged and Dally started to fight with them. The Greasers won the rumble and then Dally grabbed Pony and told him to hurry up that Johnny was getting worse and worse by the minute and that they needed to go see him. They got pulled over by a cop for speeding and Dally told Pony to act sick and they ended up getting a police escort to the hospital. when they got there Dally threatened the doctor with the knife Two-bit gave him and they went to go see Johnny. Johnny was very still and Pony thought that they were too late. Dally called out Johnny's name and Johnny opened stirred weakly and opened his eyes. he didn't even bother to grin at them. he was really white and said that it was useless, fighting was useless. Pony started the long walk home in a stupor. Pony wandered around for hours, sometime going into the street and getting cussed and honked at. A man asked him if he wanted a ride and Pony said "yeah i guess so." The man said thatPony was bleeding on his seats. the man took Pony home and. The gang was in Pony's living room just hanging around. Pony told them that Johnny was dead and that Dally had ran out. Two-bit said "so he finally broke" The phone started ringing and Darry picked up. It was Dally calling to say that he had robbed a grocery store and the police were chasing him now.Dally said that he'd be at lot in a minute and the gang ran out to the lot. they had just reached the lot as Dally was running from the opposite direction and the sirens were growing louder and louder. The police had stopped and they got out slamming the doors behind them. Dally reached into his waist and grabbed his gun and he raised it as if he were going to shoot it wasn't loaded but it was enough for the police to open fire.  Dally crumpled from the impact of the bullets and he had a look of grim triumph as he fell to the ground. Pony fainted and when he woke up the house was too quite. it was usually loud. Pony asked weakly "soda... is somebody sick?" soda said yeah and for him to go back to sleep and then Pony realized that he was sick. Pony woke up on Tuesday. he had been asleep and delirious since Saturday. Soda handed Pony a copy of Gone with the wind that Johnny had left for him. Darry asked Pony if he wanted some soup and Pony said yes, while Darry was making the soup Soda came in and laid down by Pony. He would stare at the ceiling or draw. One day he got out Soda's old year book and started flipping through it. He ran across and old picture of Bob that he didn't even recognize.Darry came in and said the Randy was there to visit Pony. Randy came in to Pony's room and Pony said to have a seat. if he could find one. Randy pushed some books off of a chair and sat down. They talked about Bob and how he was a spoiled rich kid and he never got told no. his parents had ruined him.

There were only a few people there, and it was only the people that the hearing had to do with. Everyone was questioned on Bob's death and the mugging, but Pony was questioned on how living with Darry was. he got to continue living with Darry and Soda. After the hearing Pony went back to school. He was having trouble remembering things and was clumsy. He had bad grades in ELA, and his teacher pulled him aside to talk to him. Pony's teacher said that if Pony could come up with a good semester theme, his grade could make it up to a 'C.' Pony and a lunch date with Two-bit and Steve in the parking lot. While Two-bit and Steve were being cigarettes, cokes, and candy bar, Pony was sitting on the side of Randy's fender. A few Socs pulled up and they were about to mug him when Pony broke the bottle he was drinking and threatened the Socs. The Socs ran. Steve and Two-bit came out. Two-bit concurs the Pony would have actually have hurt them. Two-bit told him to not be like the rest of them. Pony went home and got in a fight with Darry, and Soda ran away.
