The child, whenever we engage him or her, has thoughts, ideas, questions, interests, etc. They come to the experience with “their own curriculum.” We need to honor their curriculum as a key resource in their learning.

Each of us is born into a culture with certain values. From a young age, we believe everything about this culture is "normal." This lens becomes the basis from which we judge others. But actually, there is no "normal." Self-awareness, exposure to other "normals," and interrogating the basis for judgment should be a required part of any education.

We learn through experience. The experiences need to support the development of the human at that particular stage of development. We learn when we adapt. If we adapt well, we learn well. If we struggle to adapt, we might learn wrong.

We learn when we ‘work’ to contribute something to someone. First we work to construct ourselves, then we work in service of others. We always work and then learn in a social context.

Human beings follow universal laws of development that do not change based on place or time.

Just like a frog or butterfly passes through stages of development with specific growth under specific conditions, the same happens to human beings. If a child talks or behaves like an adult, it doesn’t mean the child has become an adult. It is important to know that so that the child’s or adolescent’s needs can be met accurately.
