In a Historical Drama, We as the viewers expect the film to accurately portray the landscape, building, etc; from the time period the film takes place. Argo takes place during the late 70s and early 80s. We expect to see how well it depicts the landscapes and surrounding of wherever the film takes place. For example, the depiction of Iran in the 70s is very accurate to what it really was back then by the architecture and the cars used in the background.

In a thriller, we expect the main setting to be in a dangerous place that has a lot violence happening in it. Argo uses the Canadian Embassy as a hiding place for the six diplomats. They are seen hiding in a crawl space under the floors so they won't be caught by Iranians. Argo depiction of a setting for a thriller is done well.

In a thriller, most films are a Villain hunting down the hero. Although the six American's are trying to escape Iran with their lives, their really isn't a Villain or a Hero. American's aren't the good guys but neither are the Iranian's. America planted a terrible leader in Iran. But Iran resorted to violence capturing multiple innocent Americans. But that would have never happened if Americans didn't interfere with the leader.

In a Thriller, many things are used to harm or threaten the protagonist like weapons. In Argo, seen in multiple instances are weapons used to threaten the Americans. One example is when the hostages are lined up to see if they are going to die when the Iranians fire they no shots are fired. We see one hostage fall to the ground and cry. Argo's use of iconography fits well into the genre of thriller.

In a thriller, most films are a protagonist going in a long chase with antagonist. In Argo we see the six Americans hide from the Iranians and are hoping to leave with their lives. The main reason the plot doesn't fit is because there are no protagonists or antagonists in this story it's just two different sides trying to do what they believe is right. Most would believe from a thriller that the hunter would be evil or crazy but the Iranians aren't crazy they are fighting back due to the U.S. planting a terrible leader causing many deaths. The plot suggests it is a thriller but down to the specifics it is not a typical thriller film.

In a Thriller, most use suspense, anxiety, anticipation for the mood used in their films. Argo uses these moods well throughout the film. For example, in the picture above where the hostages are being lined up to see if they will be killed, the Iranians ready their weapons and fire but thankfully no one died. Argo uses these three moods in this scene in many others. Some thought those hostages were going to die these scene put a anxious mood because if the six that escaped were caught they would've most likely died and been executed publicly and to show Iran is not messing around.

The Cinematic style for a thriller film includes different shots like High and Low shots, Tracking/Panning shots, Close up shots, and long shots. Argo uses some of these techniques throughout the film like High shots. For example when they went to the bazaar and were surrounded by Iranians the use of close up shots and high shots were used to express the fear of the Americans and the anger of Iranians.

In a Historical drama, viewers expect to see the props and background to portray the time period the movie takes place. Argo does this well by showing us how the CIA offices looked like in the 1970-1980 period by showing outdated computers and showing us how Hollywood looked back then with cars from that era and how props from older films looked which were not very high quality looking like Halloween decorations.

Most moods depend on whatever the film is based on so there isn't a specific mood the film is supposed to follow. But Argo does recreate the anger of the Iranians setting the mood well. Argo recreates the anger of both countries well. For example when some Americans beat up an Iranian man. Another example is when Iranians where protesting and broke inside the embassy and captured the Americans.

Argo uses multiple techniques like wide shots to show the portrayal of that time period. For example, when the Americans went to the bazaar multiple wide shots were used and so were other techniques. Another Example is when Tony is shown in the church multiple wide and panning shots were used in that scene to show the architecture and the people in that shot.

Affleck uses a combination of Historical Drama and Thriller to make a hybrid film. The purpose of the film was to reenact the Iran Hostage Crisis that occurred in 1979-1981. The Historical Drama aspect of film closely reenacts the danger the six Americans were in and also showing us why it happened and how both sides of the conflicted reacted to the Crisis. The thriller aspect of the film tries to recreate the anxious and suspenseful feelings the Americans felt while being in Iran. Because no one for sure could tell if Tony could've saved them or killed them. Both genres help to inform us and show us how truly terrifying it was to be an American in Iran during that time especially those six that escaped. Finally both genres informed us on the situation that happened in Iran informing us why it happened and how those Six Americans escaped. For years we thought it was Canada who helped them escape while they did it was also Tony Mendez who risked his life to get them back home.
