As body movement is key in a play because it's what can be seen of the actors, it should be payed extreme attention. I have learned this since, in class, we have performances from professionals as well as classmates in which i have come to understand that body language is key to a good performance since it's a extremely easy way for the audience to understand the emotions the character is feeling

As I have learned through time by reading, acting, and watching the play I have come to realize that the intricate connections between the characters are used by Shakespeare to create comedy as the messes resulting from this tend to be funny and comical.

The process of looking for a scene to interpret was highly affected by fact that my team was composed of only three participants. This means we had to look for a scene that was long enough and only had three characters in it which put up a real challenge. Finally we ended up finding an adequate scene that we chose because it allowed the possibility of cutting Demetrius' lines from the text without affecting the plot too much. This part, adapting the text by merging Demetrius and Lysander and having to add text trying to write in a Shakespearean way were the most challenging things during the process.

Our scene develops right after Puck's mischievousness, when he has put the love potion in Lysander's eyes and now he follows Helena instead of Hermia. This scene in the play is intense as Hermia is really mad about what is happening and feels betrayed because her loved one now follows her best friend. Druing the development of the scene Hermia's turns from being confused to being angry as Lysander just won't stop trying to be with Helena. Helena herself is't quite happy either as she believes this weird conduct is due to a conspiracy between Lysander, Demetrious and Hermia which also adds a tone of silliness to the whole situation.

Our character choosing was treated a little bit trivial in the sense that we chose randomly our characters. We had to do this since Helena had a lot of lines and neither of the three wanted to interpret her so the fair thing to do was randomize the choice. I don't regret this decision because I really like my character, Hermia. I would've chosen her either way as I like the part she plays on the scene. She's confused, mad and really has no idea what's going on but knows that her true love is mysteriously slipping away from her. She has strong emotions and mostly shows confusion which I like to perform.
I like the scene in general as it's fun to interpret and I understand its context within the play. Its importance is big as this is how the audience knows Puck made a mistake and it takes a huge turn because the love that has been driving the entire play is now gone. It's not that long, it was surprisingly not that hard to adapt when we got the hang of it and the interactions between the characters are intense and fun.

During our rehearsals I began understanding Hermia's true character. I now remembered that she was defying her father by running away with Lysander and now Lysander was leaving her. This is important as while rehearsing I realized this and decided to change my tone when interpreting her. Hermia is heartbroken, confused and very jealous of her best friend who now seems to have also betrayed her. All this gave me an idea of how mad she was and how shocked which I then added to my performance by always showing confusion on my face, then angriness and trying to make my stance agresive and defensive.

At first I had no idea how to move around the stage. I had performed before in my life but never as formal as this. It had always been kind of just the students deciding everything with no information whatsoever on what to do. But now I have come to understand a lot of aspects on my performance I should pay attention to. When I first started I hadn't really considered proxemics as I knew I always have to be facing the audience but hadn't thought about having a point in space where I should locate myself to speak and stay there without moving when not necessary. I incorporated this into my performance around our 4th rehearsal as well as more clear hand gestures which were a little bit odd at the beginning of my performance. I have changed the way I entone words as Adrian told us to not begin very loud and then start going down. I tried to make all my lines have around the same amount of energy at the beginning and the end of them.

A very significant change I have made which I believe is mentioned in two of my other posts is how I understood Hermia's context in the play which allowed me to then locate her emotions at the time and be able to work around them to make a performance which is coherent with the play's context. Another improvement I believe was to understand that I have to use my body in a clear way, not overdoing it nor not doing enough by being very assertive on which parts of the text I should or should not do a certain gesture. In general i think I have come to realize a lot about my scene by analyzing it but the whole text as well.

Eve poem

As we know, Christina Rossetti tends to write a lot about religious topics and her poem Eve could not be a better example of this. The first stanza of the poem is important as it’s what will be used by readers to develop their first thoughts about the poem. I believe this is why the poem starts by showing how sad and miserable Eve is. The title of the poem is Eve, so when words like sorrow, sin and death are used in the first stanza my first thoughts are to relate these two with the biblical Eve, which makes sense due to Rossetti’s background meaning these words are there in order to create an Allusion. “Death is the fruit it bore”, I think this is a clever line. If the poet is indeed talking about Eve from the bible, then this phrase has more than one meaning which makes it interesting. It is an allusion to the famous ‘forbidden fruit’ but is explaining how Eve brought sorrow and death to all because of her actions. This first stanza really shows how miserable Eve is, maybe even remorseful. I believe it’s a good way to start the poem as it gives readers an idea on what the whole poem is about and is a very strong introduction which for me results captivating.

The second stanza of the poem continues with even more alliteration. This is important because it has not been explicitly established that the poem is really about the biblical Eve although it might seem obvious, these alliterations are sure to clear things up. The alliterations are to the Eden garden. Words like flowers, bowers, fruit and lofty tree are used to describe a place. The feeling this stanza gives meis of serenity, peace and happiness just as Eden garden is supposed to be. An obvious alliteration is the mention of Adam which I find kind of unnecessary as the garden was enough to make the readers understand the context but it was the writer's opinion to include it. The rest of the poem is littered with more alliterations that in general all show the readers how remorseful Eve is, even with a change of narrator as now Eve’s son talks and explains how Eve is so miserable.

Rossetti Nichols

Although we haven’t seen as many poems from Christina Rossetti as from Grace Nichols, a clear difference between the two is clear. The most obvious difference is how religion is extremely more present in Rossetti’s poems than Nichols’, but there is more to this superficial difference. The main topics from the poems they both write might be different, but the mechanisms they use within their writing and techniques are quite similar. Take for example the Fat black woman’s poems from Grace Nichols. These poems talk about racism, personal experiences combined with her knowledge expressed through an artistic manner with the purpose to convey an idea to the reader, a feeling. Even though Rossetti is purely talking about religion in her poem Eve, she still uses a quite similar mechanism. Rossetti uses a topic of her interest by intending to convey her ideas and feelings to the reader. Both poets are women and they both use poetic means to communicate their thoughts and feelings. It’s interesting to see how both their personal contexts greatly affect the poems they make. Grace Nichols brings her Caribbean background and negative racist experiences into her poems by making these the themes they revolve around. Rossetti does the same with her religious background as her poems are very affected by it. I believe both are great poets that make interesting poems and they both have a way of talking about difficult topics without making their poems political, religious or any other categorization like such. Both of the poets have a way of converting real life experiences into subjective art, available to all and made for all no matter their context, to interpret as they please as there is always something for everyone in their poems.

Play

Our development in the play throughout this time period has been productive yet not as much as it could have been. We have memorized most of our lines by now which is never easy as the language is not one we are used to, but everything has gone quite smoothly in terms of production. We have messed around with the stage directions and experimented with different ways in which we could express in a physical way the intentions of our scene. Being on stage has been useful because we can have an idea of the space we’ll have available to move around, and actually I realized we don’t use as much as we could so that should be implemented later on in the process. It’s been difficult to establish the exact tone we want for our performance as it sometimes results too formal and other times too goofy. The right balance between a professional play and a more ‘lancaster’ play is very difficult to find but we are trying and I think we have implemented things from both worlds very well. The change from the football pitch to the auditorium was very big which we didn’t really expect so for later rehearsals we should definitely determine bigger spaces in which we can move around so we get used to the bigger stage. In general our process has gone well and can be highly improved by more work on specific scenes which will require us to get together after classes but overall I believe our play is coming together quite nicely.
