The story follows a mixed girl named Sarah and her struggle with her identity and her place in the social hierarchy in a world where racism is everywhere, as a black girl conceived of rape by her black revolutionary father to her light-skinned, caucasian-haired mother. her father, delusional with guilt, kills himself in a Harlem hotel. spiraling her life and taking her on a journey through time, where characters like Queen Victoria or even Jesus tell the audience the story of Sarah's life
Adrienne is an avid user of absurdism, symbolism, and expressionism, With her works containing a multitude of extended metaphors and similes. her work is considered some of the challenging and controversial, combining genres that haven't touched hands before.

Kennedy's significance as a Black, female artist

Kennedy has been writing since the early sixties, making her one of the earliest and most significant playwrights of her time. She was a founding member of the women’s theatre council, and an obelisk to black artists throughout the nation. Called “A true poet of the theatre” by Michael Kahn. Held in high regard by colleagues, her work has been described “unforgiving” and “emphatic”. Depicting harsh realities and difficult truths for her audience. Kennedy is most known for her role in the Black Arts Movement of the 1960's and early 1970's, which fought for racial equality, pride and independence for black artists and people in general. By 2003 she held an honorary doctorate of literature and had lectured at multiple renowned universities and institutions. While her own achievements and accomplishments speak for themselves, the real beauty of her art is the millions she inspired. Steamrolling boundaries at a consistency and pace never seen before. A textbook definition of black excellence.

Childhood

Born to a low middle class family in a integrated neighborhood in Cleveland,Ohio with a highschool teacher mom and social worker dad. She went through elementary and high school peacefully but during collage at Ohio state,1949, she experienced racism which continued as she transitioned to Colombia university to continue her studies. She began play writing in uni and continues to this day.
