Sudan is also in between the countries Chad, Egypt, Uganda plus 6 additional smaller countries. The Capital Khartoum can be found in the Northeastern part of Sudan. Darfur is approximately the same size as Spain for a comparison. The population of Darfur is around 7 million people (Mitchell Hamline School of Law).
When: The killings began in early 2003 but are still happening up to this very day. People in Darfur are still living their lives knowing that they are going through a Genocide full of abuse and massacre. ER

The government was the aggressors and they couldn't be stopped because there was nobody more powerful than the government in their country. And, the Americans didn't want to start anything in their country, because we didn't start it so it wasn't our job to stop it. The government used their aircraft and they would attack weak villages from the air, and then raid them on foot. These villages couldn't use anything to defend themselves because they didn't have strong enough weapons. And, they will always have an excess amount of weapons for Sudan because they trade lots of oil with China. China needs them because they provide China with most of its oil. TS

They wanted improvement with certain aspects of their life as well as a government with shared power (Origins of the Darfur Crisis - pbs.org). Omar al - Bishar took accountability for creating this genocide that killed around 300,000 people so far. He also stated that Britain and other western countries were at fault for attempting to impose a regime switch in Sudan. ER

Many Darfuris who fled the genocide in Sudan–and continue to flee today. They reside in 13 refugee camps in eastern Chad and some 360,000 people languish in those camps. The 10 long years they have lived in the camps have been marked by tight resources, threats from inside and outside the camps. But life just continues to get even harder for the refugees.

The Darfur Genocide was carried out with many different attacks. To begin, there were Sudanese Air Force attacks on Darfuri villages. Following, there would often be air campaigns followed by Janjaweed militia raids, which forced many men, women, and children to flee or be left to be murdered. It was typical for looting, burning food stocks, enslaving, and raping of women and children, and stealing livestock to occur. It was disastrous. While villages burned to the ground, as often as executions occurred, bodies were tossed into wells, contaminating the water supply. In 2004, this madness was declared “genocide” by Colin Powell, United States Secretary of State (World Without Genocide). AK

The Genocide killed and hurt large masses and populations and it was known that Janjaweed fighters were used to drive out black Africans, along with to carry out attacks and destroy communities and villages. Janjaweed was known as “evil men on horseback”. These attacks were brutal which killed and injured many people, along with the burning of homes, stealing or burning food and livestock, and poisoning water wells. Most of these attacks were carried out on the ground, there were also many sky attacks on civilians, along with aerial bombings that caused chaos all around ("Genocide in Darfur."). Not only were Darfuri men, women, and children’s rights taken, but around 300,000 people were also killed and 2.5 people displaced and forced to flee their homes (Stumai).

On September 17, 2006, British Prime Minister Tony Bliar called for a unified response to the crisis. The United Nations Security Council Resolution deployed up to 26,000 peacekeepers to Darfur and the British Prime Minister wanted to support this action. In a speech he even refers to the Darfur crisis as the “the greatest humanitarian disaster the world faces today.” The British government also endorsed the International Criminal Court (ICC)’s indictment of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and urged their government to cooperate. Later, Omar al-Bashir was ousted and turned over to the International Criminal Court (World Without Genocide). While this is progress, the United Nations estimates around 2.7 million Darfuris still remain in internally displaced persons camps and more than 4.7 million Dafuris rely on humanitarian aid. The ICC issued arrest warrants for alleged crimes comitted in Darfur, such as genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. Unfortunately, The ICC must rely on individual states to arrest individuals due to their lack of a police force, and for that reason Bashir remains free. (“Genocide in Darfur”). The country then began to transition into a permanent government. While the violence has been limited, it is still continued to be seen under this new government (World Without Genocide). AK

Finally, on Dec. 14, 2019, President Omar al-Bashir was sentenced to two years in detention by a court in Khartoum after being convicted of money laundering and corruption. He was also indicted over genocide and war crimes by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for his role in the Darfur conflict. He has since been removed from office and arrested in April of 2019 following months of protest. However, his two year sentence has been widely denounced for being too lenient. SS
