Romeo recently had been rather upset at the rejection by a woman named Rosaline to start a relationship with him. Romeo's sadness causes Benvolio to be concerned for him, and wish to help him get over the rejection. Benvolio figures Romeo can get over Rosaline by finding someone else more beautiful than her (1.1.218). Later on in the play, Romeo and Benvolio are made aware of a party that Rosaline along with several other women will attend (1.2.82-87). Benvolio takes this opportunity to help Romeo move on, and convices Romeo to go to the party.

By convincing Romeo to go to the party, Benvolio sets the entirety of the plot in motion. Romeo meets Juliet at the party and falls in love with her, which gets him over Rosaline as Benvolio had hoped. This also causes the main conflict of the play, which is the fact that despite Romeo and Juliet loving each other they are allied with opposing factions that would never approve of a marriage. There are many effects on other characters due to this, though the one effect most of the characters first notice is that Romeo is no longer upset over Rosaline.

Despite Benvolio's attempts to convince Mercutio to leave with the danger of a fight breaking out, Mercutio stays. He says "...I care not" (3.1.32) to the approach of the Capulets. Eventually, Mercutio and Tybalt begin to duel. The duel ends with Tybalt dealing a fatal blow to Mercutio. Benvolio tells Romeo, "Mercutio's dead!" (3.1.119) which would not have resulted if Mercutio decided to leave.

Benvolio ends up losing a dear friend, and spurs Romeo on to duel Tybalt. Despite the Princes declaration against fighting and Tybalt's murder resulting in having him executed anyway, Romeo kills Tybalt. The Capulets are distraught at his death, and the Prince is forced to banish Romeo as punishment for fighting a Capulet. Romeo's banishment marks another key part in the plotline.

Benvolio is unsuccessful, and Mercutio ends up dueling Tybalt in swordplay. Mercutio loses the fight and dies, which spurs Romeo on to slay Tybalt to avenge Mercutio. The Prince is made aware of Romeo's murder, and banishes him as punishment for going against his declaration against the fighting between the Montagues and the Capulets.

This failure to prevent Mercutio from fighting forces Romeo and Juliet to separate and speeds along the process of Juliet being married off to someone else. This forces the characters to have to act quickly, which has some very catastrophic results.

The final big event that resulted from Benvolio's action, and the biggest event in the play, is the death of Romeo and Juliet.

Romeo hears of Juliet's "death," and unfortunately is not told that her death was a trick. He purchases a poison and heads to the tomb Juliet is buried in. Along the way Romeo duels Paris and kills him, as well. Once Romeo reaches Juliet he drinks the poison and dies. Later, Juliet wakes up from the poison and discovers Romeo's dead body. This causes her to stab herself to death, leaving both lovers dead.

Benvolio, ultimately, caused Romeo and Juliet to die. Benvolio introduced Romeo to Juliet, though indirectly. Their meeting causes Tybalt to challenge Romeo, which causes Mercutio to die after being provoked by Tybalt and Tybalt dies after dueling Romeo. Romeo is then banished, and since Juliet was being married to Paris in a few days, she had to get out of the wedding by feigning her own death. Romeo thinks Juliet is dead, kills Paris, and kills himself as a result. Juliet also kills herself after Romeo's suicide.

Overall, Benvolio's emotions had a very big impact on the play.

Emotions have a major effect on people's actions. In the play everyone's emotions drives their actions, from Romeo's grief to Benvolio's concern. Benvolio's feelings have not changed too drastically from beginning to end, as Romeo had always had something go wrong for him, but there's no denying Benvolio had a big influence despite this.

Benvolio's greatest consequence of his actions is the death of Romeo and Juliet. Had he not brought Romeo to the party and introduced him to Juliet, it is likely everyone would still be alive.

Though this result may imply that the lesson to be taken from this is that you should not help out friends, Romeo and Juliet's death was not the only result of Benvolio's actions. Because Romeo and Juliet died for each other out of such love, the Capulets and Montagues end up making peace with each other in honor of the lovers. So instead, a better lesson to take away from this situation is that good can come from any seemingly bad situation. Even though several people died in the process, the feud between the Capulets and the Montagues was eventually resolved and prevented any future deaths due to the feud from occuring.
