In Moonlighting it is shown when Lucentio tells Petruchio of the wealth that comes with marrying Madelyn/Katherine from her father Baptista.  In 10 Things I hate about you it is shown by Joey(Hortensio) offering money to Patrick if he can woo Katherine.

- All three films in the end show Petruchio/Patrick actually falling for Katherine/Kat and isn't as motivated by the dowry/money/potential power as much as he is with Katherine/Kat/Madelyn. This is shown in 10 Things I hate about you following when Kat catches on at prom that he was initially doing it for money/(power money has) and he shows up at her car and gifts a Fender guitar to Kat while also asking for  a second chance. It is shown in Moonlighting when Petruchio agrees with Katherine on his mistake that the "sun is not the moon" and then goes on to confess his love and equality to that of Katherine. In The taming of the Shrew it is shown when he and Katherine attend Lucentio and Bianca's wedding.

- All three films portray Petruchio or Patrick as feared to the audience. In Taming of the shrew it is Hortensio's encounter with Petruchio's shear bruteness. In 10 Things I hate about you it is shown in a variety of ways from where he hangs out like at motorcycle bars to how he acts by drilling a hole in the book Cameron is holding. In Taming of the Shrew Tranio is Lucentio's servant who is not equal in power to Lucentio. In 10 Things I hate about you Tranio better known as Michael has been at Padua High School for a while and in the beginning of the story seems to hold more power over Lucentio being he knows more about the school and its way of life. In Moonlighting there is no scene depicting Lucentio with a servant making him seem less powerful than in the Taming of the Shrew.

- Another major difference seen between all three films is Lucentio's wooing of Bianca.  As seen in Taming of the Shrew Lucentio acts as a scholar to teach Bianca where as in Moonlight he doesn't need a scheme. In 10 Things I hate about Cameron/Lucentio acts as a french tutor who knows no french, but it is a way to get to know Bianca more (Note: he teaches Bianca french at school not under Baptista's house (it would most likely not be allowed).

- Another major difference focuses on how in Moonlighting Petruchio and Lucentio strike a deal to woo Baptista's daughters, but in 10 Things I hate about you it is shown that Patrick holds the power, and is motivated by money who Cameron and Michael use Joey as there source to back Patricks efforts to win over Bianca. In Taming of the Shrew Lucentio has no part in setting Petruchio up with Kate. We also see this in 10 Things I hate about you as Michael is showing Cameron around the school when he eventually sees Bianca for the first time.  Finally in Moonlighting we see this in Moonlighting when Lucentio enters the town speaking of his travels to Padua for the university and when he sees the fair Bianca.

-  All three films portray Lucentio/Cameron as searching for a way to help him achieve his goal and his idea of power by marrying/dating Bianca by getting her older sister wed/dating.  We see this in Taming of the Shrew when Lucentio comes up with the idea for his servant Tranio to play Lucentio and Lucentio to play a school master that will tutor Bianca.  We also see this in 10 things I hate about you when Cameron and Michael see Patrick in biology class who seems just as rough and tough as Kat.  In Moonlighting it follows almost the same to that of Taming of the Shrew, but  with a little more action and goofy scripts/costumes.

In 10 Things I hate about you Patrick is seen stabbing a frog with his switchblade to show his "toughness" and close match to Kat. Also through the rumors Michael tells Cameron about some of the things Patrick has done. Finally in Taming of the shrew he is seen as an equal  to that of the shrew (Katherine) as he enters the story and the city of Padua acting Gruff towards his servant(servant=power) Grumio.

- Another Major difference is the ending of all the films where in Moonlighting he stops holding on to the power he believes he has over Katarina and instead agrees with his wife that he was indeed wrong and that it is the sun that shines. In Taming of the Shrew Katherine bends to her husband's will to show she is with him and his power not still holding out against him Finally in  10 Things I hate about you Patrick is found out about the money involved by Kat and is forced to try and win her over a second time.

- A final major difference between all three is the wooing scenes/ weddings. In 10 Things I hate about you there are many wooing scenes where Patrick goes for Kat and there is no wedding only the relationship. Throughout Zeffirelli's portrayal of the Taming of the Shrew (1967) we see a notion of power when it comes to the relationship between Lucentio as well as the main character Petruchio. The director shows us this through the perspective of Lucentio with the introduction of Petruchio entering the town of Padua (1598) on horseback with his servants bending to his every request.  We next learn more of what motivated Petruchio to come to Padua that being to strike it very wealthily and wed in the town.  As the story progressed so did the theme of power. Zeffirelli exhibited this in numerous ways from the handsome dowry to any man who could woo Katherine. A key point that should be noted in this version of the Taming of the Shrew are the gender roles and how they interact with each other when it comes to husband and wife. Zeffirelli showed us this blatantly towards the end of the story when Petruchio, Hortensio, and Lucentio make a bet to see whose wife will show when called upon by there husband. In a way it killed two birds with one stone being that not only did it show evidence to the people of Padua and us that Katherine had been tamed, but also that power in this version and historical time period belongs with the husband.

10 Things I hate about you-  
10 Things I hate about you takes place in Stadium High School in the present.  The director makes it a point to to give Joey who plays Hortensio in the Taming of the Shrew more power based off of his red sports car (money) and how popular he is due to his modeling gig. So we not only see a power struggle between Cameron and Joey for Bianca, but also with Patrick. Who has the most power over the two of them because he is being paid by Joey to woo Kat (Bianca's sister) in order for Bianca to date. This inherently means he can threaten to stop pursuing Kat if he doesn't get paid more (he gets paid more). Towards the end of 10 Things I hate about you we see how fragile the whole scheme is to get Kat to date in order to gain permission from Bianca's father(power) that she can now date. It's fragile because Patrick was only motivated for the money and that he no longer sees the money as the real value, but instead Kat.  Note Joey's power was backed by the money his family had, which we see through him funding Patrick and his red sports car. All in all this version of Taming of the Shrew reflects a greater power struggle between the suitors and even more so with their desired mates (Kat and Bianca). Who in this historical context and geographic location are equal to there male counter parts creating a more even level playing field (equal power) when searching for potential mates.


Moonlighting-
In the Moonlighting portrayal of Taming of the Shrew the director gives the audience the impression that even though the setting is that of a town known as Padua in 1593 the interpretations and scenes reflect that of a more exaggerated modern relationship towards the end of the story. To support this following David and Katherine's wedding we see an almost battle like conflict between the Katherine and Petruchio for power over the other. The director then takes a different approach to the ending of this version by not so much Petruchio Taming Katherine, but Katherine taming Petruchio. It is shown in the same fashion as that of Zeffirelli's version, but instead of Katherine giving into her husbands desire for the sun to be the moon and the moon the sun she corrects him and points out his mistake in front of the wedding guests. Petruchio responds by agreeing with his spouse on his mistake, which in turn completely erased any imbalance of power the two previously had promoting equality in their marriage and each other as individuals.
