The article “A Fire Relief Effort by and for Teenage Girls” is about how the Los Angeles art studio prepared to give supplies to the teenage girls who were impacted by the Eaton Fire. Also, an eighth grader, Avery Colvert, in Pasadena started a donation drive named “Altadena Girls” that would give the women, whose homes were destroyed or impacted by the fires, essential things they needed for everyday life. Colvert and her stepfather created an Instagram account, asking for donations of anything that would help teenage girls go back to normal life. Many celebrities supported the idea and made donations. Ashleeta Beauchamp sent donations of hair care products to the “Altadena Girls” donation drive. 

I think this article is both telling about an important situation happening with the donation drive and also kind of encouraging for the readers to make donations. The article tells mostly of one person’s donations organization and expands in telling how others were affected by it. I think it is great that many celebrities supported the donation drive. It shows that people really care and won’t leave others in danger. As for the structure of the article, I think it is very easy to read and relatively short compared to many other articles in the New York Times. Overall, I like how this article is structured and I think it also promoted the “Altadena Girls” donation drive a little.

The article “Once homeless, he has now lost his house to the Eaton fire. ‘This isn’t the first time I’ve had nothing’” is about the man named Alex Ballantyne who lived in foster homes his entire life, but when he was 18, he had to leave one and became homeless. Eventually, when he was 22, he found his biological aunt and uncle and lived with them, in their house in Altadena until it was destroyed by the Eaton fire. He said that he feels more secure now compared to the first time he was homeless because now he has a family. They are staying in their extended family’s house in Santa Clarita. Ballantyne shared that his family did not want to evacuate until the fire was very close. His uncle barely escaped from the house just when the fire was near it [house]. His friends are helping Ballantyne with fundraisers and he helps his family. 

I think this article is a very interesting feature story. First, I really like how feature it is and how it is literally a small autobiography of the person it talks about. This article is relatively long but it is composed of small paragraphs which make it easy to read, and I think this feature of the feature articles (sorry for the tautology) is what makes them stand out among the other ones and very easy to read. I also like how the quotes in the article are kind of split apart in an “quote- paraphrased quote -quote” form. Overall, this article is both about the particular person who had to go through being homeless again after the fire and even a little informative about the Eaton fire itself. Anyway, the article is written in the form it makes the reader sympathize with the person talked about. And the lead is made the way it starts a story of a little biography of Alex Ballantyne and the reader wants to know more about what exactly happened to him and what is happening to him now.

We can interview the majority of students who are directly affected by it (I mean, worrying the most about that).

I like this photo because it carries a positive atmosphere, knowing that the workers will be able to help everyone who is in need.

There are two lines on each side, a centimeter away from him, and the background, that is separated from him by the lines, is also blurred. I can guess that this effect is created by a mirror. I think the rules of photo composition used here are framing and depth of field. I really like this photo because the unusual effect created by a mirror catches the eye of a viewer, making them wonder at first, how this effect was created.

Editorial cartoon #1: In this editorial cartoon by Michael Ramirez, I see two male characters standing in the room near a car that looks like it had been in 16 accidents, had five bricks fall on its windshield, and overall had survived all terrible stuff that could happen to a car. The man who is selling the car says it was 100% made in America. The man who is buying the car has USA written on his shirt. I am not sure exactly what is the meaning of this editorial cartoon, but I think it conveys the message of how people from the USA often buy bad quality cars and easily believe the sellers. 

Editorial cartoon #2: This editorial cartoon by Nick Anderson, is titled Trump Administration Logic. It is divided in two parts, one shows the sky with two different military planes and even a missile rocket, and this part is titled Not Classified. The other side shows the sky with one plane with immigrants and it is titled State Secret. I think this editorial cartoon conveys the message of how the Trump administration considers real threats not as important, while the immigration problems they want to keep secret. 

Editorial cartoon #3: In this editorial cartoon by Nick Anderson, I see a burning and overall destroyed cyber truck with “Tesla’s Reputation” written on it. Next to it, Elon Musk is hitting it with a big hammer, and behind him there’s a police officer with a very shocked face standing and saying “We found the vandal.” I think this editorial cartoon conveys a message of how Elon Musk might blame other people for ruining the reputation of his company, but actually only his own actions ruined it.

The article “Tufts Student Held by ICE Asks Court to Return Her Case to Massachusetts” is about the woman, Rumeysa Ozturk from Massachusetts who was taken to the immigration detention facility in Louisiana because she engaged in a pro-Palestine activity. The lawyer of Ozturk said that she [Ozturk] was moved to the area, where the claim against her would most likely be accepted easier, so it was not fair for Ozturk. Ozturk’s lawyer also said that her client was taken from her house by ICE and moved to Louisiana the way no one could find out where she was, and the lawyer also claimed that the government chose the place where the trial would happen. Later, it was known that she was at first brought to Vermont and only then to Louisiana on a plane. The claims against her included that she published an article in the college newspaper that had evidence that Israel started a genocide in Gaza. Still, the university where she studied supported her and informed that the article she wrote didn’t propagate antisemitism. 

I think this article is letting us know one more time, how miserable the situation in America is. Even though there is evidence against Ozturk, it is not mentioned anywhere that her article in the college newspaper propagated antisemitism. Instead it just shows evidence of how the war between Israel and Gaza resulted in Israel genociding people of Gaza. Freedom of press allows or at least should allow student journalists to share information they want to share with the public. So, ICE had no right to arrest her for informing the students about a topic she… wanted to inform them about. As well, I think it is very devastating that the government is allowed to practically kidnap people and take them to other states secretly, as well as choose the place where the trial will happen. I believe that the government should be supportive of people that chose it and treat everyone equally no matter what country they are from and their race and ethnicity.

Spread 1 (The Mirror, Fall 2024, Pages 32-33): This spread is about stalker culture, Van Nuys High School’s music department on one page. And about the teacher adviser and then about the person who makes the costumes for Performing Arts class. The colors of the titles of articles on the spreads match the color theme of the photos added to each article. Yet, the photos seem too small for a very big body of text we see on each page. The pages seemed connected to each other since they both have sections that talk about school life (one of the pages of the spread is overall only about this). The fonts used make the magazine look very professional because of both the way they are placed on the page and their colors. What I don’t like about this spread (and the entire magazine overall has a problem with that) is that the text is very hard and boring to read. It is very small and lines that divide the articles are way too faded to get any of the readers’ attention. One more thing is that there’s simply not enough color in the pages. White takes up the biggest amount of space and establishing what spread it is (in this case, Entertainment) in gray color was not a good idea. As well, maybe this happens because of the amount of white space around the text, or maybe it was initially typed in a faded color, but making the text of the articles themselves appear gray allows the reader to get distracted by everything on the page, but not interested in the text. This publication could learn more about designing magazines from the Pearl Post… 

Spread 2 (Midway Vol. 100, Issue 7, pages 6-7): This spread is layed out very well with many photos and great fonts and text sizes. One of the things that I like the most is that this spread has a continuous color pallet for text, which includes blue, red, and black colors. There is certainly a lot of text on each page and it is not the largest size. Yet, the small spacing and a large amount of each page dedicated to photos, makes the spread look well-organized and exciting to read. The articles are divided from one another well with white space and large titles with the boldness of the text changing from the top to the bottom of the page (the top of the page has the most bold text while the bottom has the least). As well, I really like how the same shade of blue used for the text that establishes what spread we’re looking at (in this case arts and entertainment and sports) is used as well to separate the quotes from the overall body of text. As well, I like how the page numbers are not just plain text but are white numbers in a red circle. I also like how much attention is dedicated to the photos on this spread and how natural it looks. We could learn something from this spread to make our work even better!
