Haya-kun is the NWSS Japan Club mascot. His name is a pun on our school mascot, the Hyacks, as well as the Japanese word “hayaku” meaning quickly. He blends the culture of Japan and Canada, being half Kappa and half Beaver.
The Japan Club has been using Teams and the Power Apps platform on Microsoft 365 to create a resource lending library and a hub for activities and Japanese language learning. We’re in beta this year due to the pandemic, but next year hope to have a variety of cultural activities that members and non-members alike can enjoy to experience Japanese culture!

Tessellation Art Exhibition - Art 9, Art 10 & Art 11 with Ms. Le Blanc

Students were instructed to research a prominent figure from Black History in Canada, representing their contributions through custom designed black and white tessellation patterns. Students created artwork that is equal parts black and white to symbolize the need for equal representation, not only for today, but in our retelling of history. These students demonstrated commitment to representing their subject of choice through thoughtful imagery and artist statements. This assignment was a combination of inquiry, collaboration and cross-curricular competencies.
