There are many terms relating to the discussion of Communism vs. democracy. The US sought to fight and contain the spread of Communism in Asia and the campaign against Ho Chi Minh supported this fight for democracy. Also, the "domino theory" highlighted the threat of communism spreading to all of Asia. The picture shown is a truck with pro-Vietnam War propaganda being driven through a street in NYC. I would like to learn more about how people viewed Communism in the US and whether they thought it was worth going to war over or if the two ideologies shoudl co-exist. Communist Threat.

One of the most reoccurring themes of the Vietnam War I have noticed is that the United States was actually more of the bad guy in the war. They went into a country that wasn't their own and started a war for personal interests so that Vietnam would be a democracy and not communist. I would like to go into more depth and learn more about how the American soldiers and Vietnamese villagers interacted directly with each other.
Vietnam War/US soldiers and Vietnamese.

During the Vietnam War the USA went on many "bombing Campaigns".
these attacks killed thousands of the north Vietnamese and Viet cong. General William Westmoreland's goal was to eliminate the viet cong. His attempts included Bombing, as well as search and destroy missions. Some of these missions involved civilian casualties, which turned the support from mainland america agent the war. American Bomber planes targeted the north Vietnamese's oil and gasoline supply tankers as well as military supply roads and military bases.
US Airforce B-52 Bomber dropping bombs over Vietnam, c.1970 .

Throughout the article, reoccurring terms related to the treatment and lifestyle of the South Vietnamese appeared frequently. The war took over these civilians life, forcing them to change their way of life completely. I would like to research more about the 'Strategic Hamlets' in the Vietnam War, and the affect they had on the people living in South Vietnam.

8th October 1962: A Vietnamese farmer smiles as he sits with his five young children at one of the gates to the Cu-Chi strategic hamlet during the Vietnam War.

The Viet cong is a term that was reoccuring throughout the article. The Americans and Diem’s South Vietnamese were not only fighting the North Vietnamese but they were also fighting the viet cong. The Viet cong wanted North and South Vietnam to unite under communist rule. The Viet Cong utilized guerilla tactics using small groups of fighters launching surprise attacks which were unlike anything the U.S. military had ever confronted. The US forces struggled to stop the Viet Cong because they were being supported on their home turf so they could go into villages and hide among the citizens.
