Dropping the bomb was the right decision, although it wasn't ethical. Obviously killing over 100,000 people isn't ethical, but it isn't that simple. This is war time and certain sacrifices should be made. Whether civilians should be sacrificed is another question. Civilians shouldn't be killed during wartime. However, compared to acts in WW2 such as the firebombing of Tokyo which killed over 100,000 people in a few days, the atomic bomb isn't as drastic as people think. It wasn't ethical, but the ends justified the means.

No, it was not ethical to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Dropping the nuclear bomb resulted in about 180,000 deaths, but on the other hand, continuing the war may have ended up with even more casualties. Although the United States was forced to make a decision (to continue the war or to drop the bombs), I believe that both options were unethical. It may have been more justified and slightly less unethical to drop the bombs, however.

Completely eliminating the use of nuclear power would also stop revolutionizing a new method of energy, which would lead to more carbon dioxide emissions. UCMJ article 118 states "The killing of a human being is unlawful when done without justification or excuse." This is for service members but aimed at the killing of anyone, mainly innocent people. This code of conduct says premediated murder is unlawful in a military standpoint. Even if article 118 was implemented (1950) five years after the end of the war, the person(s) who ordered the attack can still be punished for a war crime.

While nuclear power has proven to be very useful as a source of energy to replace fossil fuels, it has had substantial negative impacts as a war tool. Nuclear disarmament would prevent the use of nuclear weapons while also allowing nuclear energy to be used for more ethical causes, such as in the medical field. Although it may be effective during a war to use nuclear weapons in destroying the opposition, it also damages a substantial population and causes the land where it occurs to become unfit for human presence. Research should be done to find alternative methods that are able to pinpoint on their targets more effectively.
