As an alternate ending to Romeo and Juliet, a wedding playlist which features songs by Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey would serve as reminder of the importance of love and fate. Their melodies and lyrics would celebrate the couple's passionate love, which highlight the moments of joy in their story. However, the lyrics in these songs also hint at the eventual destiny that awaits them. Tragedy would eventually emerge and doom the star-crossed lovers. The songs would illustrate how despite their love for each other, Romeo and Juliet would be unable to escape the wrath of destiny. Through this alternate ending and playlist, it can be showcased that even the most powerful love could be ended by fate. The quote "Did my heart love till now? Foreswear it, sight!/ For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night," (1. 5. 50-51) expresses Romeo's discovery of true love upon seeing Juliet for the first time at the masquerade party. This shows how love can transform one's perception. Prior, to this Romeo had believed he had experienced love, but once he saw her he realized that all his previous beliefs were wrong compared to his feelings for her. This emphasizes the power of fate in this tale in bringing Romeo and Juliet together.

Invitation to the Masquerade Party

The invitation to the masquerade party marks the beginning of Romeo and Juliet's love story, which is a moment filled with excitement. They both enjoy the party without expecting their tragic end. The festiveness and the appeal of their forbidden love only adds on the nature of their first encounter. Caught up in the thrill of the moment, they are drawn to each other. At this stage, they have no idea of the impact their love will have. The masquerade party becomes a symbol of hopefulness of their love which contrasts their unfortunate destiny. They are unaware of the heartbreaking obstacles ahead of them. Due to this, the invitations are a reminder of how their passionate love led to a fate they could never have expected. "O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright!/ It seems she hangs up on the cheek of night/ Like a rich jewel in an Ethiop's car-" (1. 5. 42-44). In this Romeo compares Juliet's beauty to a bright torch that stands out at night. This shows the intense nature of their love. It also suggests that their love is a force that exceeds expectations highlighting the power of fate bringing them together.

Juliet's Pinterest Board

Juliet's Pinterest board would be like a digital scrapbook consisting of quotes and image that tell her and Romeo's story. One one hand, the board would be filled with joyful moments such as them meeting each other for the first time or meeting each other secretly and quotes that showcase their passionate love. However, among these would be reminders of the tragic fate that awaits them. The quotes about destiny and images representing death that foreshadow the end of their story and the obstacles they face would illustrate the significance of love and fate. Despite the joy they find in each other, this board serves as a reminder that their love will have to come to an end through destiny. The quote, "O, I am fortune's fool!" (3. 1. 128) connects back to the theme of love and fate as Romeo realizes that he a victim of destiny. He recognizes that his love for Juliet had led him to a tragic outcome. This suggests that love and fate go together and the choices made by love are shaped by destiny.

Romeo's Wanted Poster

A wanted poster with Romeo on it perfectly captures the theme. It shows how Romeo's passionate love for Juliet brings them immense joy but also seals their tragic fate. Despite their deep affection, Romeo's status as a wanted man illustrates the harsh reality that their love is doomed by destiny. This poster symbolizes how their intense love defies society's standards, but ultimately leads to consequences, reflecting the combination of joy and doom in their story. In the quote, "Is it e'en so? Then I defy you, stars!" (5. 1. 24) Romeo challenges fate and expresses his determination to control his own destiny. It connects back to the theme of fate since Romeo believes he can overcome his decided path set by the stars. Despite being banished and facing many challenges, he refuses to accept his fate passively. This showcases his defiance and willingness to fight fate even if it led to tragic consequences.

Movie Comparison

"Gnomeo and Juliet" is an animated adaptation of William Shakespeare's timeless tale "Romeo and Juliet." Despite sharing the same narrative of star-crossed lovers from feuding families, the two works have notable differences in their presentation, tone, and target audience. Firstly, while "Romeo and Juliet" is a classic play written in the late 16th century, known for its poetic language and detailed characters, "Gnomeo and Juliet" is a modern animated film focused towards a younger audience. The play is rich in metaphor and symbolism, while the film simplifies the dialogue and themes to make them easier for children. Secondly, the settings of the two works differ significantly. "Romeo and Juliet" is set in Verona, Italy, between a long feud between the Montague and Capulet families, showing the societal divisions of the time. In contrast, "Gnomeo and Juliet" takes place in the world of garden gnomes, with the feuding families represented by neighboring gardens. This setting allows for a more lighthearted approach to the conflict. There is a notable difference between the characters as well. As mentioned above, Romeo and Juliet are complex characters whose unfortunate fate is shaped by their impulsive decisions and the pressure from their families. Juliet expresses her desire to be with Romeo and the belief that their love goes above fate through the quote, "Give me my Romeo; and, when he shall die,/ Take him and cut him out in little stars,/ And he will make the face of heaven so fine/ That all the world will be in love with night/ And pay no worship to the garish sun," (3. 2. 21-25). Juliet's words reflect the timeless nature of their love, even in the face of their doom. However, in "Gnomeo and Juliet," the characters are portrayed as playful garden gnomes, with their romance developing with comedy. Both stories talk about love, fate, and fighting. They show how love can overcome problems, even when things seem tough. Whether it's in Shakespeare's intricate writing or the fun animation of "Gnomeo and Juliet," both stories remind us of how passionate love can bring joy yet be tragically doomed.

This project explores the story of Romeo and Juliet by focusing on the theme, “Passionate love can bring joy yet be doomed through destiny.” I have created several pieces that shows how their love is both beautiful and tragic. The wedding playlist that offers an alternate ending features songs that reflect the happiness and sadness in their love. Juliet’s Pinterest board shows her hopes and dreams, mixed with the reality of her doomed fate. The invitations for a masquerade party gives a reminder to the night they met and fell in love starting their journey toward both joy and sorrow. The wanted poster of Romeo highlights how their love leads to trouble. Lastly, a comparison of movie versions of Romeo and Juliet shows how this theme is still relevant today. The theme is very significant to the tale of Romeo and Juliet. Their intense love brings them joy and a deep connection, but it also leads to their tragic end. Despite their joy, they cannot escape the feuding between their families and the unfortunate events that end their relationship. This theme illustrates the powerful joining of love and destiny in their story.
