Master's Degree

300 hours supervised clinical practice

Completion of no less than 36 weeks of supervised professional full-time experience or 72 weeks of professional part-time experience obtained under the supervision of a licensed speech-language pathologist.

Passing Score

The current passing score for purposes of ASHA certification is 162 (on a 100–200 scale).

When to take the PRAXIS

Individuals should register and take the Praxis exam no earlier than the completion of their graduate coursework and graduate clinical practicum or during their first year of clinical practice following graduation.

Didn't Pass?

Allowed to retake the PRAXIS but must wait 21 days before retaking the exam.

The Praxis and ASHA Certification

Individuals are eligible to apply for certification once they have completed all graduate-level academic course work and clinical practicum and been judged by the graduate program as having acquired all of the knowledge and skills mandated by the current standards. Once certification has been applied for, applicants have 2 years in which to complete the certification process, which includes passing the Praxis exam. The CFCC requires that all applicants must pass the national examination in the area for which the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) is sought.

Duration:

• at least 36 weeks AND 1,260 hours (min. of 5 hours weekly)

• Must be completed within 4 years

• Divided into 3 segments (12 weeks each)

Requirements:

• 80% of CF must involve direct contact with clients

• 20% can be other activities (i.e. trainings, in-services)

• For CF completion; must get a minimum rating of 2 under 2020 CF experience in the final segment

• Following clinical experience, applicant must apply for CCC's via ASHA within 90 days of completion of CF experience (however; can apply at any time during CF experience)

FINDING A MENTOR:

• Mentor must be a current CCC-SLP, min. of 9 months full-time, 2 hours of PD in supervision

  • Mentor must spend a min. of 6 hours on-site/in person and 6 hours of indirect supervision during EACH segment

• Verify mentor status by using ASHA's Certification Portal

**Clinical fellow must document all hours independently

STEPS TO Clinical Fellowship:

1. Earn Graduate degree

2. Find CF setting & Mentor

3. Contact State Board (familiarize with state licensure requirements)

4. Set Expectations (confirm mentor will provide 18 direct/18 indirect hours of observation)

5. Fill out Clinical Fellowship Skill Inventory (CFSI) together

6. Confirm on Track (feedback from mentor after each segment)

7. Final feedback session (earn a rating of 2 or better in final segment)

8. Complete online application (submit with dues and fees)

9. Confirm with National Office (email confirmation from office once certification has been awarded)
