As a class, we will read the book "Fiona Builds a Fairy House," which depicts a young girl's quest to gather materials, recruit helpers, and craft a fairy house. Students will then have the opportunity to flip through images of various fairy house designs in the book "Fairy Houses Everywhere!"

Using the provided materials and tips/inspiration from the books, students will work in pairs to craft their own fairy houses. Following this activity, students will write a paragraph describing their artistic choices and what elements of Fiona's home are similar or different from their fairy houses.

This experience will improve students' reading and comprehension skills and ability to identify key elements that make up a particular setting (Fiona's fairy house). It will also test students' fine motor and structural/design skills and allow them to use their imaginations and creative liberties to design their dream fairy homes.

After having read the story "Sydney and Taylor Explore the Whole Wide World," students will use materials to draw an adventure map, similar to the one mentioned in the story, incorporating four places that Sydney and Taylor traveled. Students should include one place they've been or would like to visit on their map. Additionally, students can use glue and other materials to make their maps 3Dimensional.

The chapter book is entertaining, shares valuable life lessons, encourages being adventurous, and will help students practice reading long-form stories. The creative map activity will help students differentiate settings within the book and allow them to reflect on their own relationship to travel. This hands-on, engaging learning activity will also challenge students to mix 2D and 3D mediums and create an organized, creative, and visually appealing product.

Students will select one of these two books to read individually. After finishing the book, students will be given blank "postcards," and drawing and writing materials. On one side of the card, students will draw either an image representing three distinctive traits/landmarks within their selected book or a scene from the book. On the back of the postcard, students will in detail describe the setting or event they drew.

This independent task promotes curiosity and teaches students about cool places in the US; it also teaches agency because students have a choice in picking a book and whether to draw places and a scene/event from the book. While reading, students are simultaneously practicing identifying key details related to a setting or event, which they will incorporate in their picture and practice describing in their writing portion of the assignment.
