   Choose the order of your recommenders carefully

   
   

   -Some colleges only accept one teacher recommendation.

   -If that’s the case, your counselor will send the letter from "Teacher Recommender 1" by default — unless you specifically ask them to send a different one.

   
   

   Example:
   If you list Mr. Smith (English teacher) as Teacher 1 and Ms. Lee (Math teacher) as Teacher 2, then colleges that only allow one recommendation will automatically get Mr. Smith's letter — unless you ask your counselor to send Ms. Lee's instead.

   So, make sure the teacher you most want colleges to hear from is listed first.

2. Tip #2:

   IMPORTANT: don’t invite teachers or counselors directly on the Common App website.
   -You must send all recommendation requests through Unifrog.

Some universities may accept strong AP exam scores to fulfill some requirements, but this varies by institution and program.

The same statement goes to the admissions teams of all the (max. five) university courses to which you are applying via UCAS. If you're applying for different sorts of courses (e.g. ‘English’ for some, and ‘English and Journalism’ for some others), the same statement needs to work for all of them.

A personal statement can only be 4,000 characters long, so every word counts.

One important tip is to tailor your CV to every new role that you apply for, editing it to show how you meet the specific requirements for each role.

What is a Common App essay? 

The Common App essay is your (max 650 word) opportunity to show admissions staff who you are as a person, and in particular what you will bring to the university’s student community. 

You pick one of seven prompts. The same essay goes to the admissions teams of all the universities you apply to through the Common App. 

As part of their individual application processes, many Common App universities will have additional pieces of writing for you to do, which will normally be shorter than the Common App essay.

What are MOOCs?

MOOCs are online courses offered by some of the world's leading universities and companies - like Harvard University.

MOOCs can take anything from an hour to several months to complete, and they sometimes have flexible start dates and durations. They are usually unlimited by participant numbers, available for open access via the web.

While many MOOCs are free, some do charge. Check with the course provider before signing up.

Why take a MOOC?

Studying a MOOC will help you understand if you’re genuinely interested in a topic, and having completed one provides evidence for university admissions officers or company recruitment teams that you are self-motivated and interested in the topic in question.

Course levels ‘Starter’, ‘Intermediate’ and ‘Advanced’ describe how challenging a course is for the students it’s aimed at.

The courses are on-demand, 6-8 sessions long, with each session designed to take 20-60 minutes.

Your Locker is a place where you and your teachers/counselors can store anything that’s important. It doesn’t matter what the file type is - things like Word Docs, google sheets, jpegs, pdfs, and URLs all work.

There are two main reasons why you might want to put something in your Locker: 

1. For safekeeping and to have everything in one place

2. In order to submit things as part of applications (eg via the Common App and Parchment)

A student side and a teacher side

• Every student’s Locker has a student side, where you (but not your teachers / counselors) can add:
  
  

  • application items, like your UK Personal Statement, CV / Resumé, Cover Letters
     

  • general items, like a certificate, or a piece of school work of which you're really proud
     

• Every Locker also has a teacher/counselor side, where your teachers / counselors can add:

  • General items, like Homework, Action Plans and Videos/Websites they want to share with students
     

  • Interaction items - every time a teacher adds an interaction for you and then attaches a file or URL to the interaction - the file or URL is saved to the your Locker.

This helps your teacher write a personalized, detailed, and powerful recommendation letter, not just a generic one.

Your teacher may know you well in class, but they might not know:

• Why you chose them as a recommender

• What your goals are for college or your intended major

• What you’ve done outside of class (clubs, jobs, projects, etc.)

• What personal strengths or challenges shaped you

Filling this out — even partially — gives your teacher specific stories, traits, and accomplishments to highlight, especially those that connect to the kind of student you’ll be in college.

In addition: Including a résumé or activities list (if you already have one) also helps your teacher understand your broader involvement and leadership, which colleges love to see mentioned in a rec letter.

2. Don’t Study in Your Room
Too many distractions. Find a quiet spot on campus—like the library, an empty classroom, or a tucked-away study space—and make it your study “home.”

3. Get Involved in Research/Jobs
Look for research opportunities, campus jobs in departments, or projects with professors. You’ll meet people, learn a ton, and open doors.

4. Pick Professors, Not Just Classes
A great professor can make any subject interesting. Ask around, sit in on classes, and choose teachers who inspire you.

5. Join Campus Life
Clubs, sports, volunteering—get involved! It’s how you’ll meet people and make college more fun.

6. Always Go to Class
Even if notes are online, being in class matters. Professors share insights you can’t get from slides, and you’re paying for it—don’t waste it.

7. Beat Procrastination
Figure out your weak spots. Break projects into smaller tasks, study after class before you get distracted, and reward yourself for finishing things early.

8. Visit Professors
Go to office hours! Professors want to help, and building relationships can lead to mentorships, research gigs, or recommendation letters.

9. Find Mentors
Advisors, professors, and older students—seek out people who give good advice and care about your success.

10. Take Care of Yourself
Sleep, eat well, move your body. College can be stressful, and self-care makes it way easier to handle.

11. Be Patient
Making friends and adjusting takes time. Don’t expect instant perfection—lean into the process and you’ll find your groove.

The deadlines are closing in, and your college applications are calling. Between schoolwork, extracurriculars, and the pressure to get every essay just right, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But here’s the truth—there’s still time to create powerful, authentic supplemental essays that can make all the difference.

1. Know What Colleges Are Really Asking

“Why this university” supplements aren’t just “extra essays.” They’re the school’s way of asking, “Why us—and why you?” Use them to highlight how what they offer matches what you are looking for--and what you’ll bring to its community.

Supplemental essays give you the opportunity to go beyond your Common App essay and show fit. Admissions officers already know your GPA, test scores, and activities—now they want to see how you think, what you value, and why you belong on their campus. A great supplement connects your goals, interests, or experiences directly to what the school offers, revealing  WHY you’d thrive there. Think of each prompt as a conversation: “Here’s who I am, and here’s why we’d be a great match.”

2. Triage Your To-Do List

Start with your top-choice schools or those with the earliest deadlines. Getting one or two strong essays done early builds momentum and confidence. Once your most important essays are done, you can reuse parts of them (with revisions) for others, saving time without sacrificing quality.

3. Dissect the Prompt

Don’t rush into writing. Read carefully, underline key words, and make sure your response directly answers every part of the question. If the prompt asks “Why do you want to study at X University?”, it’s not just asking why you like the school — it’s asking how your interests connect with what they offer. Break long questions into smaller, answerable parts before writing a single word.

4. Answer All Parts of the Prompt

It sounds obvious, but it’s easy to miss part of a question. Many prompts include multiple requests, like: “Describe a community you belong to and how you’ll contribute to our campus.” That’s actually two parts: your community and your contribution. Before you finalize your essay, double-check that you’ve addressed everything the school asked for.

5. Focus on One Big Idea

Resist the urge to cover your entire resume. Choose one story, one value, or one defining experience that best answers the prompt. Support it with vivid details—but skip long, winding explanations. Strong essays feel like snapshots, not autobiographies

6. Customize Thoughtfully

Yes, you can reuse ideas—but never copy-paste. Tailor every essay to the school’s programs, professors, and campus culture. Specificity shows genuine interest.

Many “Why this school?” or “Why this major?” prompts overlap. If you’ve written about a research interest or extracurricular passion before, reuse that foundation — but revise the details so each essay feels intentional and school-specific. A little customization makes a big difference.

7. Sound Like You

Admissions officers can spot a “manufactured” essay instantly. Write with honesty, personality, and enthusiasm. Avoid using AI as it often lacks the genuine, personal voice. It also churns out similar phrasing and words over and over. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s authenticity.

Instead of generic praise (“I love the beautiful campus”), be genuine about what makes the school unique. Mention a course, center, or initiative that connects with your goals. For example: “The Michigan Ross REAL program aligns with my passion for hands-on learning in finance.” That specificity turns a generic essay into one that feels written only for that school.

8. Be Specific, Authentic, and Personal

Authenticity is your strongest advantage. Colleges aren’t looking for perfection — they’re looking for perspective. Write in your natural voice, and share real experiences that reveal your curiosity, values, and growth. Be specific: “I learned to lead through listening” is more powerful than “I’m a good leader.” Avoid clichés like “I’m passionate about helping people”; instead, show how you’ve done that through a story or concrete example.

9. Stay Organized

Use this simple format to stay clear and focused:

• Intro: What’s the main point?

• Body: Back it up with 1–2 vivid examples.

• Conclusion: Connect your story back to the school or your future goals.

10. Polish with Precision and Proofread

Don’t skip this step—even a perfect essay can fall flat with careless errors. Read your essay out loud to catch awkward phrasing or missing words. Double-check every school name (mix-ups happen more often than you’d think!). Scan for small grammar issues like missing commas or repetitive words. If time allows, get a second pair of eyes—a teacher, parent, or friend—for a quick review.

11. Don’t Panic

Even under time pressure, strong essays are possible. Stay calm, stay clear, and trust your own voice—it’s what admissions officers want to hear most.

Exciting news for international students! Eligible students will now be able to work up to 25 hours per week during the semester while studying in New Zealand. That’s 5 extra hours to gain valuable experience and earn more.

What You Need to Know:

• The new 25-hour limit applies to eligible student visas granted from 3 November 2025, even if you applied earlier.

• Already have a visa with a 20-hour limit? You can apply for a variation of conditions (VOC) or a new student visa to access the extra hours.

• The VOC application process depends on which system your visa was submitted through.

As part of the UK's visa requirements, you must show you have enough money for your first year's tuition fee + living expenses.

You must deposit this amount of money into a bank account. This can be your own bank account or one of your parents' bank accounts. However, it cannot be anybody else's bank account.

You must maintain this amount in the bank account for a minimum of 28 days before you can apply for your visa. During these 28 days, the account balance must not decrease.

If you deposit the amount today, you can request a bank statement on 22nd July 2026 to use as part of your visa application.

How much money do I need to maintain in my/my parent's bank account? 

This differs from person to person.

• To calculate this, take the first year tuition fee of your firm choice university and add £13,761 GBP if you'll be studying IN London.

• Alternatively, take the first year tuition fee of your firm choice university and add £10,539 GBP if you'll be studying OUTSIDE of London.
